I'm not one to usually post on these message boards, but I can't stand to see some people dog a coach that doesn't deserve it! Coach Abel lives and breaths PN-G basketball. He has since his playing days. If the offense is so "girls basketball 101", why did last years team post the most wins in PN-G basketball history? Same offense! That team was in every single district game, beat Central for the first time in about 8 yrs, and played their hearts out in one of the best basketball games I've EVER seen and almost pulled it out (another story though)! This years team still has a legit chance to make the playoffs. They play their butts off even if they are not the most talented team on the court. They represent PN-G great. It's not coaching that loses the games. We just are a little mismatched on talent. Not to dog the kids what soever. If we want a power house basketball team we need more support all over! Nederland has 7 teams in 14U division of Little Dribblers. We have 3! We have numerous 7th grade kids on the basketball teams that have either never played organized basketball or only 2 yrs or less experience in it. Nederland doesn't. Why? Because too many parents think baseball is more important than basketball! I know. I have been around our LD program for many years. We should be trying to help Coach Abel, not run him down! How can someone dog a coach that took his own time and spent time away from his family during his off season to help a kid to compete in high jump in state! He doesn't even coach track. And be extremely proud when that kid breaks his 20t year old school record! That's a coach that should be admired, not stabbed in the back on some message board!!!!!!!

It doesn't help either when our kids have to play 5 vs 8. The refs away from home never call it down the middle! And even sometimes at home they don't!

I believe we play more total games now than when I was in school, so the most wins in school history can be very deceiving.

I'm not taking anything away from the kid with his accomplishment. He did an awesome job! I hope he wins state this year! I just don't like people using message boards to bad mouth coaching or play in any way. PN-G Basketball doesn't have as much outside, nor internal, support as other sports do and when other people read these things without knowing the full story behind the scenes, it can be detrimental to the program! And none of us want that. Let's get behind this whole team and support them on to the playoffs. They can do it! I know it will be tough, but with the heart on an Indian, the possibilities are endless! Go Big Purple!!!!!

Alot of the fundamentals start in little dribblers, and let me say this, the majority of the kids don't care a whole lot about basketball. Heck, most of the kids can't even dribble very well and that includes the middle school kids. I've had two boys play LD, and 3rd that will play in a couple of years. My kids do it to have something to do between football and baseball as well as most out there. I would say half of the varsity play football and don't pick a basketball till football season is over which is already after basketball starts. Not trying to take up for coach Abel, who I really like, but he doesn't have the cream of the crop to work with. I would think that MOST parents with athletes in the district understand that basketball is ranked #3 in sports for the majority of PNG athletes. I'm not taking anything away from all of the kids that play basketball, but the truth is the truth. There is a small precentage of kids that do concentrate on basketball, but I don't think we're a year in and year out D-1 group of basketball players coming out of PNG. Has there ever been a D1 basketball player at PNG that went on to play college ball? The expectations are to compete, and I think for the most part we do in basketball and are able to match up with most 3A schools and some 4A schools. Anything more would be EXTRA. I like coach Abel's coaching approach and if he's coaching when my kids get to HS great. If they screw up, pull them. I guess as adults in the real world, your bosses will let you screw up and give you a reward? Come on...

Last D1 I remember was Kyle Agiluard in 76 that went to Tennesee on Football and BB.
You are right we have not competed in BB ever, because we are a 3 sport school -football, spring training and baseball.

For the record we have had good coaches Bryson, Vegera are 2 that come to mind.

Yes, I believe so ... I know that Bobby Straface (McNeese) played D1 basketball. I believe that Monte Wainwright (late 1970s or early 1980s), 1 or more of the Westbrook boys (early and mid-1980s), and perhaps Joel LaFleur (early 1990s) all may have played some college basketball. I may be wrong on some of these Indians, but I know that Straface played a few years at McNeese before transferring to Lamar to finish out his college career on the baseball diamond. I do agree with the overall sentiment ... PN-G is not, and most likely never will be, a basketball first school. For whatever the reasons, it is just not. It's football, spring football, baseball, track and field, and then the groups that play soccer, golf, tennis, basketball, etc. But, regardless of all that, I say support PN-G student-athletes in everything they do ... rally around these Indians and Lady Indians, encourage them, give the coaches some love, and then enjoy the game. And, if you can, participate in PN-G Little Dribblers and tell your kids to have some fun learning the basics. Most high school coaches pour their daily lives into their youth programs. Show them some love and do what you can to support our kids.

Go Indians. Peace.

Joel LaFleur played at The Air Force Academy and could have played at at a whole bunch of D1 schools. He had loads of D1 offers. He was district MVP, all-state, and academic honorable mention All American.

JustaFan,

In the thread with PNG vs. NED you were questioning the way he handle's his player's, the offense he run's, and made the statement that we needed to change coaches. If that is not calling him a bad coach than I am missing something.

Also, don't forget people that our football team went three rounds deep this year. That took away practice time. See basketball coaches also have coaching responsabilities with football as well. I know coach Abel is assigned to varsity duties, as well as coach Arneaud. These guys are doing a good job in my opinion. It's different with baseball and football. The exectations in the community is higher with these sports. Heck, when was the last time we were picked to make the playoffs in basketball pre-season? Probably never. When was the last time we were picked to go to the playoffs in football and baseball? Oh, last year for football and this coming year in baseball. PNG basketball started before coach Abel got here, and he's done just as good of a job as any other coach before him did, if not better. If YOUNG ADULTS (kids in your terms) can't handle the pressure put on them in games and practices, well good luck in the real world of life. There will be pressure put on them in college, family life, and jobs. Just my two cents. This isn't directed towards anybody, just people that complain about the tough job that our coaches do. Scalp'em!

To be frank Tribe I do no like his coaching style. I think he waste talent at times and shows favoritism. But what do I know.

He isn't perfect, but when is the last time we played Central and Ozen within a couple of points each--in the same season?
