Final: PN-G Indians 35, La Porte Bulldogs 21

We’re on TexanLive, but not every game. Texanlive doesn’t pick up every game for any school.
They obviously do have some kind of selection process. Which brings it back to my original question/point. What is that process to decide which?

I don’t know. Some of it may have to do with schools not giving permission. The home team actually owns the rights to the game and can forbid anyone else to broadcast it. I don’t know why a school would do that, but it wouldn’t be the first dumb thing a school has done. In other cases it may just have to do with staffing - Texan live might not be able to cover every game every week. Luckily, every png game (except for the playoffs, now, since the UIL would rather put their grubby hands around a few dollars than allow student broadcasts during the playoffs) is on YouTube. Some PNG games, like the La Porte game, are on YouTube twice.

My point is not so much about the schools and broadcasting a full game.
It's about a full blackout. Not a single word or just a score report. It's more about the whole point of hyping up a big game and then reducing it to little or nothing. I get that we are here to win not hype up to get attention but this was disappointing to me.

It wasn’t a full blackout. Matt Stepp reported on the game immediately after it ended, and interviewed Jeff Joseph. Literally no other school in Texas had their HC interviewed in person by the number two personality at DCTF that day.

True, credit noted.

There is no UIL rule against student broadcasts of playoff games except when a UIL partner like Victory+ or NFHS is broadcasting the playoff game. Victory+ does plan to broadcast about 20 playoff games, and NFHS may also broadcast a few, so it is certainly possible than NDN press could be banned from one or more playoff games. If so, we have to hope the blocking partner is Victory+ since that one is free.

I thought they announced a new rule as of this year? I hope I’m wrong, but I thought they changed it

My understanding is that the school does have to get permission to broadcast a given playoff game, and I do not know whether that was always necessary. If that is a change it would add some extra work to the process. However, it appears that if it is a legitimate student broadcast (i.e., not a commercial broadcast), they will grant it unless a partner is broadcasting the same game.

Schools partner with Texan Live for regular season coverage. PN-G, La Porte and others that do their own coverage don't. Klein Oak does partner with Texan Live and that game was broadcast by them at The Reservation.

It's tough for fans that remember the days of finding detailed game info in the Saturday morning papers, including game stats. But the old days of sportswriters like Bob West, Tom Halliburton, Burt Darden, Larry Bodin and others sitting in a press box are over. Local media probably don't have the budget for dedicated sports staffs. But even when they did, the number of schools that could be covered were limited.

But Friday night news isn’t written from the press box anymore. It's a combination of fans in the stands making social media posts, forum discussions like this one, dedicated fan sites like PNGIndians.com, if a team even has one, most don't. And “official” channels like pngathletics.com, ndn press, and all other ISD social media. The state sources like DCTF are the bigger picture with more fidelity on the coverage and stories that generate more clicks and revenue. Still, I guess we fans are lucky that information is more available from places like Maxpreps if it's reported.

For state wide sources, I believe it's more about click economics and subscriptions than concern with equal coverage. As such they cater to DFW and other major metro areas. Their data analysis would show who is visiting their pages, where subscribers live, etc and they follow the numbers.

As of today, Dave Campbell's Texan Live is the official live stream provider for the following:

You are correct. PNGISD and NDNPRESS made an announcement at the beginning of the season stating that UIL will not allow them to broadcast playoff games this year. No official reason given.

I agree. As of me typing this out, I have seen no local coverage of the game. Channel 6 Tail Gate, 12 News 409 Sports Blitz... even broadcasters individual or personal accounts, nothing has been produced. Starting to wonder if there was press on the field at all. Don't know why there wouldn't be

You are correct. PNGISD and NDNPRESS made an announcement at the beginning of the season stating that UIL will not allow them to broadcast playoff games this year. No official reason given.

The official reason offered by the UIL is that too many academic broadcasts were violating the guidelines the UIL promulgates for those broadcasts to ensure the academic broadcasts permitted by the UIL comply with the agreements the UIL has entered into with the various commercial services that stream the game (e.g., TexanLive, Bally Sports, etc.).

The Texas Legislature has considered legislation on this subject as recently as this year. During the regular session in the Spring, Senator Bryan Hughes. R-Mexia, and Representative Cole Hefner, R-Mount Pleasant, filed SB 2511 and HB 4375, respectively. Those bills proposed to safeguard the broadcasting rights of both local broadcasters, like our Cool 92.5 FM radio broadcast, and academic broadcasts, like the NDN Press livestream. Unfortunately, those bills were filed late in the session and didn't move in their respective Senate and House committees.

My free word of friendly advice to anyone reading this is to contact the offices of Senator Hughes and Representative Hefner and encourage them to refile SB 2511 and HB 4375 when the Legislature convenes its next regular session in Austin in January, 2027. I would also recommend reaching out to the legislators who represent local districts in the Golden Triangle to express support for the bills, namely Senator Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, Representative Christian Manuel, D-Port Arthur, and Representative (formerly Speaker) Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont. Because Senator Nichols and Representative Phelan are retiring at the conclusion of their current terms, I would also recommend reaching out to Representative Trent Ashby, R-Lufkin, who is running to replace Senator Nichols and is the most likely candidate to win, and to Dr. Ray Callas, R-Beaumont, who is running to replace Representative Phelan and is the most likely candidate to win.

Lastly, I would recommend reaching out to Representative Janis Holt, R-Silsbee. Though Representative Holt does not represent Jefferson or Orange Counties, she is a Groves native and a PN-G grad, c/o 1975, who lived in Port Neches until the mid-90s and continues to root for the Indians today. She is also a former Silsbee ISD school board member, and SB 2511 and HB 4375 would protect the SETXSports broadcast of the Silsbee games led by Mike Sanchez, too. I have very little doubt she would get on board with both bills.

Objectively thinking, there are a lot of teams in Texas. It’s borderline amazing that Matt Stepp can even contain a percentage of knowledge on all these districts and teams. Maybe it is an over reaction to inject purpose for not talking more about the Indians. I suspect a lot of teams have the same lack of attention.

PN-G fans are particularly ravenous for information and news about their team. Sports reporters and analysts surely know this. But I think PNG is also seen as a medium sized fish in a small pond. How much attention does SE Texas receive at the state level? Other than PN-G and WO-S, there are no programs that grab attention. Nederland and West Brook occasionally make noise, but overall they are not high profile. The more bothersome issue I have is that local reporting is so sparse. The reason could be as ridiculous as petty agendas to not cover PN-G. Or maybe it’s just a numbers game and resources are not assigned to PN-G games. Not sure how that can be addressed. It’s beyond any insight I have. Maybe others here that are more plugged in or have media contacts would have an opinion.

I do also recognize what others have mentioned, even channel 6 and 12 offer no mention of the La Porte game. Where they almost always covered or mentioned PN-G games. Maybe they did on the live broadcasts and just some publish the video online? It would be nice if they could explain why.

Anyone in Texas gov plan to do anything to stop what open enrollment is doing to the sport? Genuinely curious.
