Final: Port Neches-Groves Indians 45, Klein Oak Panthers 20

Enjoyed the game. Not a bad road crowd by KO. The new PN-G band uniforms looked sharp. The Indians have some things to work on, but that's OK, it was game 1. No offense to LC-M, but playing Klein Oak in game 1 was a huge step up from scrimmaging LC-M. Klein Oak had some big, grown men on the OL and their defense was physical. There will be some soreness in the morning. Physical game. Need to tighten up the pass protection, secondary pass coverage, and tackling on special teams. Great job by the coaching staff. The Indians were ready to play and get after it. The combo at RB #27 and #6, solid run game. Looking forward to game 2. GO INDIANS!
Now that I’ve had a night to sleep on it (and am getting into college football mode for the day), I’ll highlight a few things.
First, I thought the special teams play was much improved from last season. I only saw two special teams mistakes last night. On the other hand, the punt to the one yard was executed more flawlessly than I’ve ever seen at the high school level and set up a fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown. We also had an opposing kickoff return we held to the 15 yard line and a kickoff return of our own that started the drive on the Panthers’ side of the 50 yard line. I was impressed with the significant improvement.
On offense and defense, we had a few fits and sputters. I’m most upset about the fumble the first play after we recovered a fumble and the two or three big plays we gave up on defense. That said, I also saw smart adjustments being made throughout the game. When the defense overbit on the clap to give up that offsides penalty, they made certain it didn’t happen again—no matter how many times the Klein Oak QB tried it. Overall, the defense was aggressive and proficient. The offensive play-calling was much more varied and aggressive than what we’ve seen in early season games during the Joseph era, and the kids really seemed to relax into it once we found our rhythm. Our running game is as solid as we’ve come to expect and it seems we have more threats in the receiver corps than in years past. The line play was pretty consistently good on both sides of the ball. To reiterate what I said last night, I felt that this was the best the Joseph-era Indians have ever looked in a season opener.
Now let’s look at the big picture. Folks, we just beat a mid-tier, 6A team with a thousand more students to pick starters from and one or two future D1 commits on the field by four possessions in a season opener. How many times in the Indians’ storied history have we been able to say that? I’m with 1989NDN on this one. I like playing (and beating) these big schools in predistrict games. These get us ready for that gauntlet of a district schedule and a deep playoff run. (I just wish we’d still play Memorial every year.)
PS: That new strength and conditioning coach seems to be paying dividends. Did y’all see how many cramps Klein Oak had last night? There were what, five Panther injury timeouts? Meanwhile, we looked as fresh in the fourth quarter as we did in the first. When I pulled into Port Neches yesterday, the PNMS eighth graders—probably 60 or 70 of them—were still running up and down the sidewalk on Merriman after school was over. That’s the first time I can ever remember seeing that the first Friday of the season. Do not come to play at the Reservation unless you’re ready for that humidity—because the Indians will be.

Great season opener for us, and I think that we are in the driver's seat for district. KO had some dropped passes and costly penalties perhaps, but we were in control of the game. Their big RB never got going, and actually wasn't in the game much in the second half, so I don't know what the deal was there.
PPS: Even our band was better conditioned. Don’t get me wrong, the Klein Oak band was very good. They sounded great and gave a fantastic halftime performance. But t-shirts and shorts? Because it’s too hot and humid? While our band is fully uniformed? (The new uniforms look awesome, by the way.) Come on, man—these are supposed to be Houston kids.

PNG started first drive with three straight rushing first downs with impressive OL blocking and strong RBs and once in the red zone abandoned the run game for passing.
Like a kid locked in the candy store and just can’t wait to try everything. OC so eager to demonstrate this year’s diverse passing offense. Let’s get a lead then open the offense up. Don’t let a weaker team hang around with a 6-0 lead ending the first Q. With a strong arm KO QB and two quick strike playmakers keep them on the sidelines. Control the game clock and keep KO offense on the sidelines. A lot of “brain farts” by inexperienced PNG wide receivers jumping off sides, illegal motions, offensive pass interference penalties. First game jitters.
As a whole liked what I saw as the game offense progressed. KO defensive linemen were mismatched by larger PNG OL. PNG Final drive of the 4th Q with 7 minutes was a masterpiece of closing out the game.
Play calling settled down into a rhythm as the game when along.

Observed During KO pregame warmups for a 6A team that was a small number of traveling varsity players that KO brought to the game. Number of them looked like young KO JV players without the benefit of size and weight training.

I agree with 19PNGndn68. After steamrolling KO on the first drive, just run the ball in the red zone and get the score. It was an odd play call on that drive. I would still like to see Gohkle in motion and throwing him the ball quickly in open space. The screen call in last night's game was an excellent, well-timed call. All in all, it was the first game. Lots of things to learn from and improve upon. On defense, I am impressed with the number of players that rotate in and out. Helps to keep those legs fresh and gives a lot of kids some experience. GO INDIANS!

Speaking of the number of players that were rotated in and out, can someone post a pic of the roster from the game program? NDN Press did a good job of identifying most of the players, but not all.

An undersized PNG defense held Klein Oak’s great running back and talented receivers mostly in check. KO’s QB is also very talented. KO is going to win a lot of games.
Overall the defensive quickness, aggressiveness, tackling and coverage was a pleasant reality. Keep in mind a lot of these guys are new and they’ll only get better. Is #45 Benoit injured?
Glad to see the passing game getting an early start. It’s going to be a vital part of the offense so the pre-district reps are important. Offensive line will shape up more. Bailey has a rifle arm and is accurate. The Indians cannot run, run, run against a quality team. The offensive line was not consistently opening holes. Multiple receiving threats are going to really open up the field. Also great to see Chris Diaz more involved. He is a hard nosed runner. A great alternative to keep Tyson Henry fresh.
Special teams also looked solid with overall good kicking, coverage and some great returns.

Benoit will not be playing this year due to an injury he sustained last year and is taking time to rest for the upcoming baseball season.

I don't take it as griping. Indian fans just love to talk football. Most of us are 99% wrong, but we love to talk about it. Sharing "what ifs" and different views/thoughts on the game. Some have questions and others of us are just thinking out loud. We all support the coaches and kids. No offense intended to the staff or kids. As I get older, I don't complain about the losses much less the wins. I'm just happy a new generation of PN-G kids get an opportunity to compete...and all the kids at PN-G are INVOLVED in something--sports, band, cheer, Indianettes, G-Crew, etc. Get involved, stay involved, and have fun. If they do, they will be Indians for life. GO INDIANS!
