Game Day/Discussion: PN-G vs Texas City

After waking to a new day with clearer thought it’s easier to recognize that the Indians played a hell of a game against a TC team that everyone thought would dominate. It would have been nice if PNG had won and solidified a #2 spot in district but it didn’t work out. There were noticeable adjustments made by coaches in the 2nd quarter to counter the Stingarees. And the 3rd quarter was fun to watch. But the Stings came up off the mat and rallied. They are a good team and no one should be surprised.

The offense produced almost 450 yards and 42 points against the best defense in the district. Outstanding play by many individual players.

A few tweaks on defense with focus on tackling and pass defense will do wonders. Broken record I know but finding a solution to reinforce the middle of the defense against the run and remembering to look for the ball when defending a pass will change everything.

Thanks Indians and forgive us fanatics for the vitriol. We just want to see you do the best you can and win.

Well said IndianFan. It is just frustrating seeing the tackling techniques that are successful not being utilized game in and game out. I will never understand it. Hit them low and wrap up the legs and they go down.

As I stated last night athletic ability is great, but you have to be a student of the game to improve your football IQ. I grew up in a different time before technology and cell phones. I spent every waking hour studying game film of my opponent, myself to better improve my game as well as to find an advantage or weakness over my opponent.
Just different times.

With todays tech (HUDL) it’s simple for a player or coach to study game video of opponents. They can sit down at any computer at any time to pause, rewind, sort by play type, different angles, etc. etc. If a player is dedicated he has all the tools he needs to learn. But it seems that the average young person has too many other distractions including social media, the scourge of humanity.

I sometimes think this is a forgotten aspect of the game in this age of instant gratification, although I am not sure how common it ever was at the HS level. In any case, it seems clear that it should be emphasized more and that the coaching staff have an important role to play in this process.

I still remember like it was yesterday. When i was a sophomore I was moved up to varsity after the 2nd game. My 3rd game on varsity I had 3 interceptions in a game, but was faked out of my shoes and bit on a fake. Gave up a 70 yard TD. After the game as I was only 15 my dad picked me up from field house. I thought he was going to say great game, 3 interceptions!!! No all he wanted to talk about was the 70 yard TD I gave up. My father kept me grounded !!

Everyone did not get a trophy in those days. If a player messed up you heard about it or sat down on the bench and the next man up would get a shot.

Definitely need to improve some football iq. Some of that falls on coaches. May be time to add some pick plays or rub routes for first and goal. Go Indians.

Could also just try running the ball. I realize our run game was very inconsistent against TC, but I can’t believe we did not even try it once from the 5 during OT.

TC OL was very physical, quick and strong.
Like the old PNG lines. PNG lineman used to easily whip opposing linemen that had 50+ pounds on them. Technique, leverage, quickness and determination will beat a bigger opponent. Unless he has those same qualities along the additional size and strength.

I meant to say TC Defensive Line.

Agree...+1. PN-G has a good back in Trahan and a good OL to run behind. #77, #72, and #75 can hold their own at the line of scrimmage and move the DL backwards. Why not load up behind the OL and give Trahan one or two shots from the 5-yard line. Or, bring in Adams and let him pick a hole on the QB run. He gained positive yards last night when he ran the QB draw. He is a big kid. If he does absolutely nothing else but fall forward, he will gain 1 or 2 yards. Do that from the 5-yard line and the Indians are knocking on the door at the goal line. I get it. PN-G practices the short, quick passing game. OK. Good. Well, take what the defense gives you and let the run game have a shot inside the 5-yard line.

I'm more frustrated with the secondary and special teams. TC is a wing-T team and they threw the ball around like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. On special teams, TC was down by seven and everyone in the stadium --EXCEPT the ST coach -- knows TC will need to steal a possession. Onside kick. Viola. TC has the ball. Hello? Coach up your kids to be prepared for an onside kick. I'm still frustrated. TC comes out and kicks PN-G in the teeth. 21-0. The Indians roar back and lead 35-21. We lose the game because a wing-T team throws it all over the yard and we can't cover an onside kick? It made for a long drive home last night. Gave away the 2nd spot in district. Now, we will be on the road for the first playoff game and will likely be one and done. All of that said, I'm still making the drive from the Heights down to Santa Fe. I want to see the purple and white Indians (not the gray) beat the green Indians.

I know this is trivial, but I'm hoping to see the stormtrooper look next Friday. White helmets / White jerseys / White pants ... purple trim. If they wear gray, I will throw-up. Getting down from my "GET OFF MY LAWN" soap box. Go Indians.

Our DB’s lose site of the ball. We seem to be chasing. You have got to keep touch with the WR. When you play 10 yards off the ball you lose the ability to keep contact with the receiver. When you jam them with you hands at the line you’re able to have touch with them down the field. When your chasing them if makes it lot harder to keep contact and you lose the ball because you’re chasing them.
Hard to make sense in a post.

Your post makes sense. I watched it versus Crosby and TC. I see exactly what you are describing. The DBs give up 10 yards in cushion and the WRs still run by them. Chase mode.

That’s fine at times, but you have to have athletic safeties over the top that have instincts for the ball. #2 shows flashes of that at times. One of the best I’ve seen in the area over the years Deonte Thompson of WOS and Sage Seay of Nederland. They were ball hawks and had high football IQ.

Ever notice how the linebackers and defensive backs seem to run alongside a runner and not try to stop him? Like it’s a race to the finish line instead of tackle time. Sell out and attempt to tackle him. Dive, fly, whatever it takes.
