Too early to be sure.
How will we respond to a loss?
Nederland still has a grueling schedule.
We must beat Montgomery with max tie points if 2 or 3 way tie.
It's going to be a challenging game film review for the coaches and players. Here is where character development is crucial. I'd rather suffer an early loss if it develops us into a better team.
Consequences can sometimes be a better teacher. If not this year then maybe next.

I heard it was 18pts max and reverts back to H2H after third place team is decided. The info reportedly came from the Huntsville (corrected) coaching staff.

I don’t understand the logic of that tiebreaker. If Team A defeats Team B by 18 points, we already know that Team B defeated Team C (hence the 3 team tiebreaker). So basically, the team that gets beat by the most points (Team B) advances as the 2nd team.
Team A beats Team B by 18
Team B beats Team C by 5
Team C beats Team A by 15
Answer: Teams A and B advance. Huh?

If PNG wins this game, they will be guaranteed either the 1 or 2 seed. If they lose, PNG will be the 3 seed and Nederland and Montgomery will fight it out for the 1 and 2.

I reported it slightly wrong, as they were discussing in the context of at three way tie for third place and thus how the third and fourth places would be decided. So there is still 18pts max and reverts back to HCH after the HIGHEST seed is decided (not the third place). Nevertheless, in the example above by eazy money, it is my understanding that the way he described the outcome would be correct with regard to how the two highest seeds would be decided, and in the case of a three way tie for third place only teams A and B would advance. However, for a three way tie for first or second place all three teams would advance but the tiebreaker would decide the seedings by the same formula.

Yes, my example was a potential 3 way tie for 3rd at 4-3, if Ned wins out and Montg loses out. Lake Creek would be Team B in that example. Still makes no sense to me.

It will be a tough weekend for the players. They’re going to feel like they let everyone down, including themselves. The #1 rank, win streak nonsense is over. But they’re still a talented team with great coaching that needs to wake up and play like every quarter is the last. To steal a line from Trump, “it should have never happened.” The Indians played the last 13 minutes against Nederland like they could have played the entire game and won convincingly.

Come Monday they need to get back on that winning horse, and work harder than ever. Watch that game film and take ownership of any mistakes. And hold each other accountable. Tackle better, play the pass better, block better, run better, kick better. Run better plays. Coaches will soul search too.

Montgomery is in for a payback effort from the Indians.

Yes, Montgomery will be tough and they are salavating over a delicious payback. But, PNG will patch up its wounds and fight with renewed determination. PNG is a great team and will play with great intensity next Friday. The local fans (I live 650 north of the Reservation) need to encourage them and cheer them on at their public practice sessions.

Montgomery will be tough to beat. Their offense appears to be as good as, if not better than, MLC’s, but their defense appears to be vastly superior to MLC. Glad we get them at home. We will need to regroup quickly and perform at the level we should have performed against Nederland. Game could very well be as close as the other three games against the top district teams. Game will likely decide whether we get one of the all important top two playoff seeds.

it's going to take a better plan, effort, and execution of the plan to beat Montgomery. May as well think of it as if playoffs are on the line.

Montgomery scores a lot of points. And averages 455 yads per game on offense. But can't use that as a definitive measure. If the Indians play better they can win.

Montgomery has a talented QB. He's elusive and when he hits the open field, he's the fast. Montgomery also has two good RBs. They will be a load to stop. PN-G has seen plenty of good RBs--LaPorte, MLC, and Nederland. Contain, contain, contain. Set the edges and tackle. I watched the Huntsville v. Montgomery game. Huntsville got off to a good start and the Hornets were fast and physical on defense. Our Indians need to bounce back and be physical. We can't let one loss turn into two. We need to get some momentum to go 8-0 for the rest of the year. I believe! Our kids will get things rolling! GO INDIANS!

One good thing about all of this is losing #1 and the win streak. I can’t think of anything worse to be distracted by than a silly win streak or an arbitrary ranking. Now we can get back to football. Just play the next play. That’s what Nederland did.

Very true! I know the Coaches try to keep them focused and block all the State Championship, ranking, and win streak hype out, but they hear about it EVERYWHERE and it’s all over social media so it’s just hard for 15-17 year olds not to get distracted and caught up in it. Nederland can enjoy their “15 mins of fame” while we get back to business!!

I’ve been hearing it in the stands all season. I hear fans talk about going to state as if it’s a guarantee, and obsess about the rankings both at games and on social media. I can’t imagine that doesn’t get to the players’ ears. So, as disheartened as I’ve been all season about how “off” everything seems, I’m pleased that we finally have a loss to learn from. Continuing to win would validate the things we’ve been doing wrong. Now we have a real, painful loss to our biggest rival to chew on and change from. Maybe it will be enough to mold us into something better. Because, if we’re being honest, we haven’t been the true #1 all season. Dave Campbell just couldn’t move us because we hadn’t yet lost. All the problems that hurt us against Nederland have been hurting us in every game this season. La Porte, Lake Creek, Huntsville - I count all of those as losses. The only difference between Nederland and those others is Nederland didn’t make the same mistakes and we weren’t as lucky against them. We need to be hungry and humble again.

The terms #1 ranked, defending state champs or a winning streak were never mentioned by this Indian fan. That’s bad mojo, jinx, tempting fate…

Time to tighten up and refocus on the little things that got you there.
