PAN: Masters requirement will limit applicants on PN-G football job

If this requirement keeps us from choosing the best coach, let them change it or whatever it takes. I would like to see the job posted on TASA and anywhere else in the state and even nation so our applicants are top quality. If this process is done in secret and with hidden agendas, I hope the school board members come up for reelection soon and we can make some changes with our vote.

I think it is quite obvious why a Master's degree is a requirement for the HC job at PNG. Many of you may disagree, so I will list the many reasons why it is so. If I leave any thing out, feel free to add. Here goes:

1. Well just because..
2. It looks good....
3. It has always been a requirement but, .....
4. You can't be a good coach without one....
5. Actually, one of the best coaches I ever had -- Coach Winn actually had a PHD in nuclear physics. Really - go check it out. He never bragged about it. Honest.
6. Actual wins and losses mean nothing, what really counts is his ability to put together a lesson plan.
7. Since a lot of women have their Masters, maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. Break that glass ceiling down baby.
8. I can count one hand all the winning coaches who didn't have their Master's.
9. We got to keep up with Nederland.
10. The head coach of Harvard is a shoo in.

I am just an old East Texas redneck with a college edumacation, but I just don't git it.

Ok, just curious, but do you think they'd be willing to hire someone without a Masters with the requirement that they enroll in classes and activily pursue it? That may be the better way to go if they just HAVE to have it that way. I think we could still get a great coach and the board can get what they want too. I have looked into getting my Master's and most classes for all degrees are online now so that would make it easier for someone to work as the head coach and still attend school. I know when I was in Nursing school it was required that the instructors either have a Master's or be in the process of getting it in order to teach. I don't know, I just think they need to be a little more flexible with this, there are many GREAT coaches out there and it would be a shame to exclude them just because they don't have a Masters Degree!

I think that they have made their selection already and that he has a Master's degree. Thus it makes it easier to eliminate candidates that may be popular.

If they do have a front-runner in mind, based on the the fact that the candidates qualifications and history are outstanding, would that be such a bad thing?

My gut feeling is that a current, or former coach with outstanding pedigree is very interested in coaching PN-G. And has possibly contacted PNGISD. But if that were the case it seems that they could bring him in sooner than later. Only time will tell.

Oh I agree 100 percent-sooner than later is better. Man I hate using that word "sooner."

Squaw, are you running for the board AGAIN?
Old Dog, I don't know who you think I am, but I never ran the first time. If so, I like to think I would've won. lol BTW, who do you think I am? Certainly NOT associated with current board.

It is possible they could do that....Many candidates do not want their name associated with the job unless they are truly in the running...Hush deal for some of the bigger dogs I would expect...

I wouldnt blame them for doing this....The players from those schools could get the wrong message and thats the last thing you want HS players thinking about...

Alot of these coaches know the process and just dont want their name out there until it comes down to the end....I support that...

Good post, I would respect our Superintendant for not reporting the names to the media.
