Lots of interesting scores tonight

My second favorite (IF it’s accurate I hope)
EL PASO Eastwood leading St John Bosco Ca first quarter 28-0?
Can this be real?

Montgomery Lake Creek not having a great night. Losing 33-59 to 6A Magnolia in the 4th. Magnolia is playing backups so LC may close the gap a few more points.

South Oak Cliff lost 0-38 to 6A Northshore.

Game 1 is almost never easy. And playing an opponent from a higher classification is tough.

That was UGLY! Some of the worst tackling I’ve seen in several years. DB’s need to step up and stop being afraid of contact. We missed Droddy and Richard.

Lots of rust on both sides of the ball. But it does feel good to get a W in the season opener for a change! I had some concerns about the running game early in the game, but they evaporated as the game progressed. Passing game should be fine, although we do need some receivers other than Nunley to step up. Biggest area of concern for me based on this single game is probably the kickoff and punt coverage, which consistently got gashed. However, KO did have a lot of speed in general and some shifty returners in particular. Overall I feel pretty good about the game.

This was a glorified scrimmage. Same as the past 2 years against Memorial. Can't read too much into the performances or outcome. Now the coaches have some game film to teach with and evaluate players.

On offense I expect Tyson Henry will see a lot more carries per game. His running style is what the Indians need.

On defense, the backs need more time to gel. And tackling can improve a lot more.

Let’s start with the good. Tyson Henry reminded me of Isaiah Nguyen in how he runs. With time for Henry to develop, I think he and Chatagnier will strike a dynamic similar to the one Chatagnier shared with Nguyen. We saw how that worked out last year. Bailey and his receivers corps both looked good once the offense found its rhythm. Same goes for the OL. The defense forced six turnovers, only giving up ten points to a fairly talented (if poorly coached) 6A team with an OU commit and as much speed as we’ll see all season.

Perhaps most importantly, the stellar in-game adjustments we’ve become accustomed to from this coaching staff were on full display; I took particular notice of how the passing game exploited the seams that were opened when Klein Oak stacked the box early to stifle Chatagnier. McDaniel’s still the best high school DC in America, in my book. In the end, we walked away with a three possession win in enemy territory. It was a strong first outing for the 2024 Indians.

Now let’s talk about the bad. Two drive-killing false starts and two fumbles, including one scoop-n-score, within spitting distance of the end zone during the first ~15 minutes of regulation. A bobbled snap on a PAT attempt that, thankfully, worked out for an unintentional two pointer. Some bad snaps on punting attempts that, thankfully, didn’t cost us anything.

It’s hard to complain about a 22 point victory over a school with a thousand more kids to build a team from. All in all, this was a good win for the Indians. Change two or three key moments in the game, however, and this easily could’ve been the Indians’ third consecutive season opener loss.

The main thing is that we know what we need to work on. The offense needs to work out some stiffness. Defense has a minor size issue in the backfield and needs to do a little work on tackling. Special teams needs the most work of all. I trust Joseph & Co. to iron out those kinks.

We’ll have another good season this year. Will it be another history-making season? Only time will tell.

Our CB’s are small

Klein Oak had a couple of 6-2" receivers that ran 4.4 or 4.5. That is tough to cover.

#10 Travis Cobb (Sr), #2 Gino Ramirez (Sr), #8 Seth Brisboe (Jr), #3 Ryder McCloud (Soph) are the young men who started the game and who are going to step up this season and defend the pass.

The dbs last season were on the small side too. Reid Richard was 5'8". Poole and Droddy weren't much bigger. And Travis Cobb is back from last season.

Every position on the field will improve exponentially from week 1. A real opponent vs going against the practice squad is a different experience. Even our top notch offensive line needs to improve and become the best that they can be. And they will. Nothing that can't be overcome with good fundamentals, repetition and enough speed and intensity. You can bet that tackling drills will be heavy next week. But overall, I think it was just adjusting to the speed of the game and first week mistakes. And this first game was a reality adjustment of a new season as the fans were still on the state championship cloud.

PN-G will be fine. Nothing beats game experience. The DBs will get better with game experience. The coaches rotated kids. #12 came into the secondary, read the QBs eyes, diagnosed the play from the QB roll out and had a beautiful INT and return in the 4Q. The other kids had some good moments, too. #45, #4, #35, #94, and #49 will get after you on defense. You better block #94 or he will blow up the whole the play. It's great to see the Coach McDaniel and the DL coaches rotate fresh legs into the game all night long. I don't keep a play chart, but a lot of kids get some snaps during a game. On offense, #27 and #29 were nice surprises. #15 is a bruiser. Got to hang on to the ball. #16 showed flashes of being a good possession WR. Need more help for #11, but man, he's great. I wouldn't be surprised if teams don't double him. The OL has spoiled PN-G fans...they just wear teams out. In the 3Q and 4Q, PN-G controlled the line of scrimmage and Klein Oak had some big kids on defense. Didn't matter. The Indians OL just steamrolled them. The special teams issues will get worked out. It's game one. NOTHING beats live game action to learn from and get better. Some people sitting around me at the game said a few kids to watch this season are #22, #26, and #27. #27 showed what he could do last night. #22 ran a fly route but the ball was just out of his reach. Enjoyed the band, Indianettes, G-crew, and a great out-of-town PN-G crowd at the game. Good size crowd. IT IS GREAT to see so many kids involved in activities at PN-G. Football, band, Indianettes, G-Grew, the PN-G flags, NDN Press kids taking pictures, and trainers. If you're a kid at PN-G and your not involved in something, then you don't want to be involved. GO INDIANS!

Everyone has to remember
The Joseph way is
Space in the secondary (a few tip or overthrown INT as a result)
Grind
Stay one or two scores up
So this game yes we had some turnover gifts
But we were going to win the grind regardless they couldn’t stop our passing game

Ok I have had time to watch the game and now rewatch the game. Some observations.
1 I have read online and discussed in person worries of Indian fans.
2 Secondary, Punt and kick coverage, and possibly the running game.
3 My take on the concerns
To start with after two viewings of the game and the help of some players parents I have come to find out some starters did not play.
Concerning KO and PR coverages from what i watched they did not use all the kids who will most likely be on those teams. Example Wuenchel(SP) went out for KR coverage and after heading on the field they called him back off the field. Looks like he will be on that team just not in preseason ( My guess).
The running attack will be fine. Henry will be a good back up for Blair. The oline will gel more and more by the time MLC comes to town we will be a much different team as in the last two seasons.
Coach McDaniel is the best DC I have ever watched coach in HS football. If improvements are needed they will be made. He will also always have his players were they need to be.
The secondary had multiple interceptions, but still showed first game jitters or rust if you will. They will keep improving.
I watched part of the Dayton / Crosby game. I watched part of the Brenham / Huntsville game. I also watched part of the NS / SOC game today. Dayton likes to throw up alot of deep bombs which take time to develop. Brenham surprised me my defeating Huntsville. Huntsville QB looks to not be very accurate. SOC its really hard to tell anything from that game because they were so outclassed.
One thing for sure Conner Bailey is a special player. This kid just continue to develop and be an amazing QB. He will get on the same page with some of these other WRs and that part of the game could be deadly if needed. The front 7 on defense is going to be very very tough. This team is loaded and will be a handful for any team to handle. Joseph takes it one game at a time. Sorry I have not learned everyone's name yet as I have been on 14 of the last 17 days straight at work.
I was also very shocked at the MLC score last night. They scored 20 points in the 4th quarter against Magnolias backups. I could not find video on the game just going off the box score and a write up I found.
All in all we have a good shot at being a good team in district. Its only 1 game for each district team but I was surprised by some of the outcomes.
Go Indians.

I like how many players are involved

And how the minions (smaller quick tough players) perform
That’s the secret to having a championship team is the minions (look how many H backs we have) which I LOVE they’re hybrid between RB/TE/OL
wouldn’t mind if some of them put in some time at DL
stocky yet fast skill position players who look to be rotated in and out regularly

Love that we’re running plays from under center and the I and pistol
And love the pursuit and philosophy of the D and the players

No reason to be concerned with anything. Of course each week will bring improvement. Things like the pass timing, blocking, tackling.

The way Henry runs, it looks like he should be RB1 B or A with equal carries.

Personally, apples to apples…I think we looked WAY better for the first game than how we started out the last 2 seasons against PAM and things turned out pretty darn well, so I’m not concerned. Of course, the path back to Jerry’s World is gonna be a lot tougher thanks to the UIL but we have some of the BEST “navigators” and “copilots” in the STATE!!
