He will get better he had similar issues last year but as the year went on he became what I believe to be the best player on the whole team,This is only his second year playing football.

Yep, same thing last season. Something about football/basketball comparisons. IDK, but I think it's the old "run before you catch it" syndrome, even when catching it in the endzone. He needs to catch just one of those long ones, and then he'll be ok.

Exactly,he struggled early on couldn’t even catch a screen pass then he had that crazy buzzer beater TD catch against Montgomery last year and he became a completely different player ESPECIALLY in the playoffs.

Some observations so far

#1 Benkert is our most improved player (he just had a great return while I was typing)
Ashworth throws a great ball off his back foot which he needs because while our OL IS protecting they’re getting bull rushed during pass protection (they’re keeping their body between the DL and the QB)
WHICH IS GOOD
We are a kicker factory (place kicker)
Next week QB is similar to this week just more athletic
22 Valdivinos is a good player great addition
Montgomery is a legit backup at RB

And #2 is earning his number right now he’s our main star at this point which Henry will make up ground but Gohlke (sorry for spelling) is pretty amazing so far.

We played well, much improved ball security from last week. But let’s be honest, WB is not a good football team. Barely beating Nederland last week and getting dog walked this week both D2 schools. Gohlke is definitely our best all around offensive weapon but Ashworth and Henry are just as dangerous. Too bad there’s only one ball to go around. Defense did good last night, a couple missed tackles and a busted assignment TD but besides that the starters only allowed 1 other TD. The TD that put them at 19 was against mostly backups.

Overall, a lot looked better. I think we got tons of film to learn from and there were several drives where we looked like we were developing a good identity.

On dropped passes: We shouldn’t blame any of our WRs for dropped passes. But we should blame the decision to call those passes. Those long td passes we dropped, we shouldn’t have even attempted. On one of them, we could have just run for it on 3 and 1 and gotten a first down. We didn’t need a quick score. We needed to put our foot on their neck and hold the ball and burn clock. I have serious questions about the decision making to call that pass. It blew up a drive in their territory, and they scored after taking over on downs. If they had been a good team that one play might have been the difference between winning and losing. We almost never need those long passes. We need to just do what is most likely to work, and a long td pass (1) is very unlikely to work; (2) doesn’t put pressure on their defense; and (3) is extremely predictable. I think the OC thinks we get free plays. We don’t get free plays. When we can get an easy first down and drain the clock to put the game entirely out of reach and we instead go for an unnecessary long TD that blows up the drive and let’s them put points on the board, that’s how we open the door for teams to beat us. That’s why Nederland beat us in 2024. If we try that crap against Crawford or Brenham we’re going to be punished for it. On the other hand, if we would simply get the first down when all we need is a first down, that’s what makes teams fear us. We don’t need to try to score quickly. In 2023 against Brenham we had a 9 minute drive, planting their stud RB on the bench and forcing them to watch their season drain away on the clock. Texas is covered in teams that can “score fast.” They lose to teams who control the clock and don’t waste drives on stupid vanity calls.

This team has more capable skill position players than I can ever remember. QB, RB and WR positions. And possibly one of the best defensive secondarys.

We could have scored 70 last night.

We execute plays and sometimes the results are big and we score.

The coaches know exactly what they are doing. Look at the results.

Throwing deep can spread the defense and help the run. A very potent passing attack can hopefully develop.

Also good to keep moving the chains with highest probability plays to maintain possession.

Jeff Joseph, Gary Joseph - establish the run, hit the play action button. Figure out the drops and profit from momentum boosting big plays later on.
Second and 1 when one of the drops happened, take a shot. Incomplete pass + false start — both things we clean up.

I’ll remember the complaints about deep shots when we’re complaining about the vanilla play calling in week 6.
