2021 Preview
Coach: Kevin Flanigan. Lettermen R/L: 22/29. Starters returning O/D: 6/5. 2020: 7-3/3-3 district.

Players to watch: OL Tyler Lee (6-3, 265), QB Cale Hellums (5-11, 190, 4.5), OL Patrick Mologne (6-1, 265), WR Jayden Grey (6-4, 190, 4.5), DE Cavan Tuley (6-3, 225, 4.7), TE/DE Travis Bates (6-3, 250, 4.8). Top juniors: TE Colson Snyder (6-3, 235, 4.8), K Carlos Alvarado (5-10, 160, 4.7). Top sophomore: DB Matt Gainey (5-10, 160, 4.6).

Other prospects: DB Brandon Perry, WR/DB Derrick Taylor, DL Luke Roaten, OL Landon Roaten, RB/DB Christian Womack, DB Davis Morton, LB Keegan Handal, DL Jeremy Albers.

2021 notes: The Cougars proved they were more than capable of competing at the 6A level, posting a 7-3 record and just missing out on the playoffs a year ago. Flanigan thinks his team is ready to take the next step with a solid group returning, led by dynamic dual-threat QB Hellums (1,447 yards, 11 TDs passing; 1,798 yards, 19 TDs rushing). Hellums will operate behind a stout offensive line led by Lee and Mologne. WR Grey (28-416 yards, 4 TDs receiving) is a big and physical target on the outside and will be a key weapon. DE Tuley (59 tackles, 5 sacks) leads a veteran defensive line that should be the strength of the defense. Junior K Alvarado was solid a year ago and gives Tomball a reliable weapon on special teams.

This is probably going to be the first real test of the defense. With the Indians missing several of their defensive starters it won’t be any easier. Tomball is going to score their points.

This is another game where ball control and steady scoring are critical to a win for the Indians. Burn the clock to keep Tomball off the field and to keep the defense fresh. Error free ball with no errant snaps or penalties will go a long way as well.

That info isn’t readily available. Hopefully some can make it back by the Nederland game, and hopefully the two that left the field last week are ok. In the meantime ‘next man up’ as 1989NDN likes to say. Backups are stepping in, playing hard and making a difference. End result is a deeper team.

Agreed...next man up. Several PN-G teams in the past were smaller, slower, and outmanned. They found ways to win with few mistakes, good technique in the trenches, and controlling the ball. It almost worked last season vs. FBM. It will work this week. If the Indians can clean up the snaps, limit penalties, avoid TOs, and control the ball with Trahan toting the rock behind our OL, they can get the road win. Get the ball to Trahan in open space and let him roll. If Tomball loads up on the line of scrimmage, then take a few shots downfield. On defense, keep doing what you have been doing in the first two games...get as many kids around the ball as possible. Tomball will be bigger, faster, and have an advantage with depth, but the Indians can compete. It does not matter if our kids are first team, second team, third team, or on the JV...get in there, compete, and keep grinding. It will be my first time to see the Indians...making the drive from the Houston Heights to Tomball. GO INDIANS!

The other amazing thing is the starting lineup is full of sophomores and juniors. Of course the senior leaders are the bedrock, but the younger players are going to keep improving with reps. They will settle in, recognize things better and adjust to the competition.

How many Sr's do we have starting (assuming all healthy)? This bodes well for next season (not that I'm discounting this season).

.

You’ll see about 17 players returning that are starting or getting significant snaps. About 11 graduating including some big names like Trahan and Bergeron.

Gotcha...that's still a lot returning next season. Hopefully we have a good running back or two coming up the pipeline.

You are spot on Justafan. Last week the starting seniors on offense were Trahan (RB), Bergeron (TE/HB) and Wallace (WR). Offensive line started 4 juniors and a sophomore. The core receiver group includes 3 juniors in addition to Wallace. And Crippen is a junior QB.

On defense with some starters out, 4 seniors , 6 juniors and 1 sophomore started. One of the seniors left the game with an upper body injury and was replaced by a senior.

That's 7 seniors, 13 juniors and 2 sophomores starting. Another junior is part of the starting receiver rotation. Most of the backups are juniors and sophomores.

6-4 265+ junior Jansen Ware (#72) is one of the best offensive tackles I've seen at PN-G. Great size, strength, agility and technique. Don't be surprised if he gets a major college offer.

Tough to keep up with kickoff times. Tomball ISD is still showing 7:30. Better to get there early than late just in case.

Also tough to discern the location. This says Tomball ISD Stadium which is the new stadium. I thought this was being played at the old ‘Cougar Stadium’.

PNG's Athletics site also lists TOMBALL ISD STADIUM AND EVENT CENTER .

So this game is being played at the new stadium off of Grand Parkway (99).

Yes that Tomball stadium is similar design to other small towns that became large quickly. Confusing entry and exit (hard to get to once you’re there
