If Coach Burnett continues to aquire good assistant coaches such as the DC, the Indians can succeed. I don't think there is another coach anywhere who is as committed as Matt Burnett. He just needs to build the program to be successfull which includes good coaches who can teach fundamentals, motivate, scheme and adjust during the game. And that includes the middle school level where it all starts.

This may sound blasphemous but that was the key to Coach Ethridge's success in the 70s. He had several coaches on staff that were as good as they come who went on to very successful careers of their own (Greg Davis, Bruce Bush, Tim Nunez, etc). When those coaches were lured away the football program suffered.

Agreed IndianFan. The head coach is only as good as his assistants and we have losts some good ones the past several years.

I definitely enjoy reading the views and this does remind me of why this message board was created....

As for the actual "after he retires"...There are tons of guys that no one has mentioned that would be knocking on the door to get to PNG...You could say though that HD Coaches near the bigger cities are getting big paychecks.....Some are just the Hd Coaches with no Athletic Director duties, some even get heavy "camp money" to distribute amongst the coaches....Once some of these guys get years in even as a DC/OC its hard to leave becuase of the money....

I have a feeling a big name would come though!!!

I agree. With the history of PN-G and the new stadium, there will be a number of guys jumping to throw their hat in the ring IF and WHEN that position becomes available.

:welcome: I just wonder how welcoming the community would be if a qualified "outsider" with no ties or prior history to Port Neches or Groves would take the reins of the program. :flaming:

I'd be there with bells on. The closest person to the program that I'd want would be Mike Long. Remember, Danny Malone did not come from within. Sometimes you have to go outside to prevent tunnel vision.

IS Mike Long older than Burnett? If so, retirement would come about the same time.
besides, as long as things are going good, I'm behind Matt. I like the way he changed things up last yr.

I think the comment about assistants was a great observation every good team in high school has good coaches not coach. now that said the best team we have had in recent times was in 1999 and we had great assistant coaches i.e. Mike Long but I have not said I want Burnett to leave the article says when he retires. I think we will have another sucessful season under coach this year

i think we should hire within, but if we go outside i want the coasch should be an Alumi of PNG. The outsiders that do not bleed purple will not be successful due to not having the true traditional PNG pride! Remember Danny Malone??

Actually Owens was after Malone

1993 2-7-1 Tim Owen
1992 9-2-0 Tim Owen District Champions

1991 6-4-0 Tim Owen
1990 7-4-0 Danny Malone
1989 12-2-0 Danny Malone

And the 2-7-1 record came after being moved up to a pretty tough 5a district. Burnett took over in 94 and went 1-9. Not trying to defend anyone here, just stating the facts.

The season prior to Malone's first was Troy's last. The Indians went 1-8-0, including shutout losses to Nederland (0-29), LC-M (0-13), Bridge City (0-14), and West Orange-Stark (0-51).

I remember Danny Malone well. I was in school during his brief tenure. His record is as follows:

1989 12-2-0
1990 8-3-0

Especially considering he followed a 1-8 record by cremating half of the teams that had shut us out the year before, I don't see how Malone can be seen as anything other than a MAJOR success.
Nederland (0-29) followed by (41-7)
LC-M (0-13) followed by (34-28)
Bridge City (0-14) followed by (42-20)
West Orange-Stark (0-51) followed by (20-25)

Out of those four, you have two total blow outs, and win, and a near loss.

I haven't even discussed the other teams that were handily revenged.

I know that you are talking about the rumors surrounding his resignation. I know for a fact that those rumors were unfounded. Many people did not like an "outsider" coming in and telling their babies what to do. They didn't like his method of motivation. They did what it took to tarnish his image when he left so PN-G could continue to leave its head up its hind quarters and promote from within or hire alumni. Look where we have been since with the exception of one or two years.

I will be extremely disappointed if the district blows this opportunity by not searching abroad when we get the chance to hire a new HC. Tunnel vision is all too plentiful at the Reservation. The reasons for having it are unjustified.

Much agreed pngfan93 . Well said.

Although PN-G is known for their traditions, I personally believe that many parents and alumni feel like the team should only be led by someone that is local, and well familiar with the traditions and programs from the past. This could hamper future teams and their success. I mean, what happens if there is no choice that meets these criteria when the time comes?

I believe that looking ahead, the focus should be more on finding someone that is known for building successful programs and more importantly someone with the ability to recognize the strengths that each of these talented young men (football players) bring to the table and successfully building a team around that.

Although many have been quick to criticize Matt, I remember him being able to do just that when Long was quarterback. Burnett has built PN-G to be a team that no one over looks or counts out on any season! That is not an easy task, and certainly speaks to his staff all the way down to the middle school coaches successfully being able to groom competitive, hard working, athletic young men.

justafan... I'm pretty sure Owen's last season was in 4A. If I remember correctly that was part of the reasoning of replacing him with Coach Burnett... people were really concerned how ugly 5A would be under Owens direction. I think we should look outside of the district when he decides to retire. PNG should be attractive to a lot of coaches and with the addition of our new facilities, PNG is even that more attractive. Of course, I have not heard that he is considering retirement any time soon, so we need to support the coaches we have and hope we don't lose any more assistants.

Thanks ndnsrock. Couldn't remember. Wasn't defending Owens, was just trying to state some facts. I for one am going to support our coaches but I will criticize them if I feel they aren't producing. I feel like we have some talented coaches but think we lack in some areas also. I think we lost alot of talented coaches the past several years.

Yeah, I think there are areas for improvement. I'm definitely not a homer. We made the needed adjustments on offense last year, it was a shame that it took the heat being turned up to do it. I said last year that we just needed to tweak the offense and mix up the playcalling(throw on 1st down, set up one play with another, etc.) not start completely over. We tried going to the spread and it did not work, then went back to the old offense with the addition of using the I formation and mixing it up and look at the results. The thing I have always questioned is the fact that PNG prides itself on power football, but always ran a pro set instead of the I. I am very happy to see the I being employed more often and hope it continues.

Just a reminder.....Doug Etheridge was an outsider and who can fault this record here? Personally, I'd love to see another Etheridge here. Hiring an outsider, IMHO, does not detract from the Indian spirit. Doug still has very fond memories of PNG and speaks of the fan support with affection almost every time I see him.

When you see Coach Ethridge, make sure you spell his name correctly. ;)

I say, PN-GISD should hire the most qualified applicant. Whoever applies for the job ... hire the most qualified person regardless of age, race, ethnicity, address, etc. Find a winner and give that person the job. It would be nice to find another Doug Ethridge, or the next Alan Weddell, Art Briles, Todd Dodge, Dan Hooks, etc.

Go Indians. Here's to a great 2008.

Peace.

 Must've been a bad day---I do know how to spell. lol Thanks for the heads up! I agree wholeheartedly with you. PNG should hire the most qualified person regardless of where he/she is from originally. I, for one, cannot wait for football season to begin! Go Indians!!!
