Who Can't Afford to Pay for a Qualified HC?

There has been several comments about "so and so won't come here because of money..." I have a couple of questions. Did anyone else read the article in the PA News that reported that our superientent makes roughly $13,000 a year more than Nederland's sup? Also, they reported that PN and Ned do not give their sups a car allowance, yet I clearly remember when our school board voted to give Creel a $900.00 car allowance every month. Jim Westbrook was the only board member to vote against it and he was ostracized for it. Also, did anyone notice that our superitendent got a 5% raise her last contract which was higher than anyone else's in the entire area? What's going on that we can't offer a high quality Head Coach a competitive salary? If I hear "so and so won't think of coming to PNG because of this or that" I will just scream! Anyone offered the HC position should be proud to come here. I'll get off my bandwagon, but would like to hear others thoughts on these issues. Also, I thinks its imperative that the new HC be offered the AD position, also.

Squaw,

I agree with you totally on this whole money issue, and I think deep down our board of directors know that to get a quality coach means paying the right salary period. To me it goes hand in hand. If our next HC is going to be the AD,then that person has to have a master's degree, so hopefully those candidates applying for the job will have that in their resume. Go Big Purple.........

Coonass--I guess that means you agree with everything the board has done, such as 5% raise instead of 3% for the superintendent. Evidently, you think $13,000+ is all right to pay our top administrator. If so, I'm glad you feel you have money to throw around. Some of us are more fiscally responsible with taxpayers money. I also stated that I did not know if she gets a car allowance or not, but Creel did. As for Westbrook, he's gone but I've never known him to lie about anything. As for being around here for "decades", you don't even know who or what you're talking about. AND, I don't have to toot my own horn---actions speak louder than words. IMHO, you should remove "COON" from your user name and leave the latter. I don't get on here and try to rip people up. This forum is for everyone to voice their opinions, etc., even if they don't agree with yours. Get a life.

"Thems be some fightin' words..."

Seriously guys, if I understand everything correctly, its not about what I or you want. Its about what is best for the kids (or at least it should be). So lets stop rippin each other and see what we can do to better the community for the kids.

With that said, I understand if coonass wants to get in his rebuttal.

I have watched you toot your horn on "i talked to this person" or "I heard this was going to happen"..That finally I need to call you out on false information....Current supt gets no car allowance (even if Creel did)....Westbrook wasnt "ostracized" as you like to call it, he was just filling the community with lies to bettter support his "backings"....

The next head football coach, in my opinion, should be evaluated on past experience and success and I am "positive" the board will compensate him as needed. The past is the past on who was paid what, and what degrees someone had and what people need....These coaches know the game...

Although you have been around for decades Squaw it doesnt mean your "sources" are not biased...

You should really think about who you are talking to. I have never known squaw to lie or make things up and I consider her "sources" very reliable.

Squaw,

Does Pride pay your bills and send your kids to college?????? Get REAL! Would you choose to work at an office because it was "pretty"? or because the people were "nice". We are talking about a job and an extremely demanding one...believe me I know, I have been there.

We have got to pay someone based on their qualifications like any other job out there. And the higher the qualifications...the higher the pay.

That's just what I said--we need to fork up the funds required to get a good HC/AD. If we're not gonna do that, then give Matt his job back. My concern is about the process being used to select someone. The opening is not even posted on the statewide sites. I, personally, want a coach with NO ties to PNG previously.

Why are you so adamant about getting someone with no ties? I do not understand your logic. Can you please clarify, because we were not playing bad because of who Matt knew. It was because he refused to change his gameplan, despite many of his assistants telling him he needed to. And i don't mean a drastic change, i mean making little changes that could have won games. We need someone who will make those changes to win, and it doesn't matter if they know everyone in Port Neches. I agree with most of what you say in your posts, Squaw. I just don't see why they have to have no ties.

I just want to reduce the chances that any "politics" will interfere and that we have a coach who has a clear plan and knows how to execute it. I fear, whether right or wrong, that if someone who worked with MB is hired there will be basically no change in strategy and gameplan. If you want someone who loves PNG, is a good Christian man and a great family man, we need to keep MB. If you want to win games, we need to hire someone who always plays the best player--regardless of who his family/relatives are.

MB never played kids because of who their parents were, he always played the best player. You have no argument here....Burnett never seemed to play favorites....he put on the field whoever he thought would give him the best chance of winning, in my opinion.

With all due respect Squaw, don't kid yourself. Politics plays a heavy part at PNG, and everyone knows that. Regardless of who you are, or where you came from, your previous affiliations or not, it simply doesn't matter. Politics will eventually play a part, right or wrong. That's why Malone left so suddenly the way he did. It may not happen in the first yr. or 2, but it WILL happen. Sad to say though.

I agree...However I do believe 95% of coaches play to win these days especially with the amount of hiring and firings of coaches due to winnings......

Check your facts about WHY Malone left....politics didn't play as big of a role as you might think. Not trying to start anything because, coaching wise, Malone was one of the best we've had at PN-G. However, he did do some "extra-curriculars" that helped with his exit

My husband is an ex-profootball player. I have asked him many times, since he loves football so much, with his education and experience why he does not consider coaching football. His response is, many years ago he coached a high school team in another state. He was "heavily" pressured to play boys for who their parents where or knew to the point he finally quit. He told me that when he coaches, he coaches to win (period)! You can not always win playing the mayors son or the <who ever's> son just because of who his parents know. In other words my husband WILL NOT play politics, so that is why he will not coach. It is not just PNG. Politic playing goes on everywhere in ever state. I did not believe it until him and I got together and I saw for myself. Politics can really ruin a good thing and leave a sour note. Sad but true.
