PN-G has yet to fire on all cylinders but remains good enough to stay undefeated. Defensive lapses continue to be the greatest weakness.

Huntsville keeps chugging along.

Montgomery remains a threat to any team.

Nederland belied it's critics and is in position to make the playoffs.

Lake Creek falls yet again. They are not the team that everyone expected.

Splendora, West Fork and Dayton continue to be overwhelmed by the top teams.

Still not sure of the 3 way tiebreaker rules, that would be good to know. But looks like PNG, Montgomery, and Nederland should be in the playoffs at this point. Huntsville still has Road games against Lake Creek and Nederland to play, which is the only chance now for Lake Creek to get in.

Montgomery could still technically lose its last three and Lc would be in as long as they win out (would have to beat Huntsville). If Montgomery only loses two of the last three they’d still have the tie breaker over LC. PNG or Ned can lose the last three and still be in over LC. Huntsville would have to lose to Ned and Lc to miss.

So, I’m not taking anything away from Nederland because they’ve improved A LOT, and definitely look LEGIT! However…I could be wrong, but MLC seems to be one of those teams that can’t rebound after a difficult loss because they just don’t look like the same team we saw! Kinda reminds me of FBM…they rolled into The Reservation last season wanting revenge after losing to us in the playoffs and when that didn’t happen…they just imploded…lost to TC, got BEAT DOWN by a struggling Nederland team, and knocked out by Randle in the first round of the playoffs!
Just my observation for whatever it’s worth!

That’s probably part of it. As a program, they have no experience overcoming losses to play well later. 2022 was their first good season, and their only losses came in the playoffs. Losing at all in district is uncharted territory for this group, and then losing two in a row was absolutely not where they thought they would be.

I also think they create a matchup problem for themselves on defense that any decent team can exploit, no matter what their record is. They basically set themselves up where one guy will have a chance to make a play, and if he misses the tackle no one else will be in position to do it. Nederland just had to wait for their chance , and LC gave it to them.

Lake Creek was 10-0 both of the last 2 years in the regular season. They could be looking at 5-5 this year. Hard to believe with Byers and Morcos back this year. They were virtually a playoff lock. But if your defense can’t hold teams below 40, it’s a problem. Teams have also figured out how to neutralize Byers and get some stops.

I said on a certain other messageboard last night that one should never underestimate the Montgomery County sense of entitlement. I will add here today that one should never underestimate Montgomery County overconfidence, either. There’s not a lot of experience overcoming real adversity in that neck of the woods. The way the MLC coach talks about their opponents exemplifies the broader cultural problem.

I guarantee y’all there are folks in Montgomery County fuming over the fact that two Golden Triangle teams are currently leading the district race today.

I’m sure they hate it and it makes me happy. They were good for exactly two seasons and immediately started running up the score on weak teams. Last night the first time a call didn’t go their way they started screaming swear words. I’m not offended by profanity, but in my experience people at high school football games tend to do a good job keeping their language clean. There’s small children at these games. These millionaires can’t fathom the idea that their precious little beauties aren’t the bestest most special angels in the world.

I agree with your assessment of MLC and FBM. Pride cometh before the Fall. Have to respect Huntsville. I expected the same outcome would befall Huntsville after the narrow loss to PNG. Huntsville's next week convincing win over Montgomery spoke volumes about their resilient character. I pity their next district opponents.

There must be an underlying MLC issue with the small participation in varsity numbers and subsequent lack in game roster depth.

When MLC went 12-1 in 2022 they were beaten in playoffs 55-18 by FBM with MLC scoring late in the 4th Q against FBM reserves with a lot of penalties. MLC “faithful” only remember the lasting embarrassment of the 2022 season. The previous week in the 2022 playoffs MLC beat Leander Rouse 78-19. Karma is a revenge dish best served cold.

I'm calling it here today... Huntsville will bounce MLC from the playoffs next week in Montgomery County. The sad thing is their crybaby coach will intentionally run up the score the next 2 weeks against Splendora and WF to make himself feel better. Those kids at MLC deserve better.

The coach at MLC is not a very good character person. His views in life are skewed when it comes to his job. He has a sense of entitlement that I have rarely seen personally. For example Coach Rodney Southern is a really jam up guy. The coach at Brenham is the same way. I have spoken with both and they are class acts. MLC's coach not so much. The character of the coach is written all over his players. When we played them they came out after the half and formed a line and stared down our fans. Just stood there and glared us down. I was so proud in the 4th when we caused them to have two false starts by the overwhelming crowd noise and band activity.

I have been thinking this same thing. We crushed their will.

I totally agree with this because I thought the same thing too! That loss seemed to take the wind out of their sails because we were the team in 2024 that they wanted to beat after getting bounced out of the playoffs last year.

+1 to all that you guys are saying about MLC.
Great effort from the Ned players. I will say that there were some very critical late game calls and non-calls that affected the game, in fairness to LC. I wasn't present so I can't say if the calls were good or bad, and the Texan Live camera just wasn't in the right spot. The TL announcers said "there's no flag" after the 4th qtr Ned interception that stopped LC's drive. Later the refs did call PI when there was no interception.
It was a very poor referee that didn't call roughing the passer when the LC QB was knocked out of the game for a critical series. And then later flagged MLC for roughing the Ned passer, which gave them a 1st down, and the subsequent go-ahead TD. Not taking anything away from the Ned RB, but Ned definitely benefitted from hometown refs.
Hopefully we can get a decent game from the refs next week. It sure seems that we've seen it all so-far this season, from the refs to the fake punts, the on-side kicks, the trick plays, the dirty plays (like the fingers to the eyes that the MLB RB was dishing out vs us), and I don't how many QB draws that seem to always go for 1st downs or TDs. Anyway that's my take, not gonna argue about it, this isn't an argument, just a discussion. I'll pull for Ned, except on MCM week. Go Indians.

Also BTW, I like #4 playing in the box. And I noticed that #43 played the whole game last night; that's good, getting him back in form and back in shape after his long recovery. He's at home in the box and for pass rush. I didn't see #35 however, I hope he's good to go next Friday. Go Indians!

Edit: And another thing. Just looking back on Texan Live, the '22 and '23 MCM games, it brings back memories of the pushing and shoving, holding, clipping, face mask grabbing, throwing punches, and much of this was after the whistle(s). I fully expect that next Friday that they will try to get away with everything that they can get away with, no holds barred. They've got nothing to lose. Hopefully PNG will keep their heads.

That’s that factor I talk about

The teams that celebration and opponent degradation is so important
They take it double hard when they can’t and the roles are reversed
It can kill a program as it’s possible it’s the beginning of that for FBM
Texas High
PA Memorial
Very subject to morale drops

Always remember it’s the second player that retaliates is the one that gets penalized. Keep your cool.

I may not have paid as close attention to the last few NDN press games
But have the QB draw runs diminished since moving #4 to MLB (nothing against any of the other past MLBs) I’m wondering
(Not stating as fact)
And yes we’re facing lesser dual threats since
We definitely have a bend don’t break “system” in the secondary especially early

(That’s been true for a couple of years)

Which I like for a few reasons
First HS WRs regularly miss or tip passes
Which benefits this style coverage (tip drill most likely to work on defenders facing QB rather than back to QB)
Also it lulls the offense to sleep which increases the chances of jumping a route for the int. Later in the game
The season has come together perfectly for us to make another deep run (so far)
If it was a video game I would pick this philosophy for my imaginary team
Big OL with Beef at H backs (our secret weapons yet to be unleashed) stop the run (though we’ve had our troubles early) bend don’t break pass coverage.
I know I’ll get some flack for this but I like the “pooch” kickoff it puts pressure on the player catching and is a .25 onside kick and all but eliminates a deep return (Just my opinion I respect the disagreements) As I’ve stated I would do away with punt return - (exception's included) (the deeper they are in their territory the more exceptions (if they’re punting from their end zone yes put the returner out there) (increased pressure and more to lose from the long roll) (Liberty Hill fake a casualty of that mindset (who would have predicted that haha) and maybe some situations you don’t even do returner on that (big leads, their defense can’t stop us (plug in the numbers)
But overall we’ve hit the jackpot with our coaching philosophy not only because of the results record wise - it’s an exciting team to follow.
The offense isn’t looking to impress you with how fancy they are therefore they’re not revealing anything

Also in my imaginary fantasy coaching consultation job
I would LOVE it if when the team makes a play they line up in single file style and exit the field with no celebration (I know that’s not possible) (talk about demoralizing the other team subtly) almost like “no biggie” haha. “Yeah we scored another one” (yawn) haha. Isn’t the first won’t be the last.
That was one thing that impressed me about Roschon (once you have a few hundred TDs it’s all good)

I have increased levels of respect for teams the LESS they celebrate.
I could explain more (and I’m sure I will and have lol) but it’s a huge part of team dynamics and opponent psychology that’s well overlooked.
I’m not an X/O guy I’m a psychology guy

When I play in poker tournaments I don’t look at the flop I look at the subtle changes in the other PLAYERS at the flop

That’s the only reason I’ve had some success at poker.
You can win a game and also destroy a whole program with psychology (we killed FBM with the second win 7-0)
(Might not stay dead forever)
(One of my patients was on staff she confirmed my suspicions it not only demoralized the FB team but the whole teaching staff)
