FINAL: Port Neches-Groves Indians 46, Montgomery Bears 38

Good observations. The Indians have looked better conditioned than every team I’ve seen them play. With Henry and anyone else, even a 16-17 year old has to catch his breath now and then and let the heart and lungs replenish the oxygen. Especially after running for hundreds of yards and exerting that much effort.
The tackling is up and down. I’ve seen #5, #33, #35, #19, #32, #92 and others making some textbook tackles all year. I guess it’s situational. Bringing down a 230 pound brute can make anyone look silly at times. Pooch kick is good against a dangerous kickoff return threat. It bottles the returner up in a smaller area. We have been burned too many times by fast return guys. If you can’t kick it out the back of the EZ, kicking it high to the side between the 20 and 30 allows your tacklers to converge and also increases the chance of a botched catch. Especially if the guy is not used to catching kickoffs much. Offensive calls could definitely benefit from some plays that counter the defensive trends. If Montgomery wanted to send everyone including the outside backers, which they often did, burn them with some misdirection and run to the outside. The main problem I observed was the slow development of the runs. Henry is brilliant at finding a hole and bursting through it. But there was nothing but a wall of white and dark uniforms in front of him in the second half. And Montgomery knew what was coming. With this team and these coaches, and their ability to adjust and overcome, I like them as a top team in the state until someone stops them. There is some serious ability on this 2025 team. They’ve just yet to put together their best efforts.
Hopefully the best is yet to come!

Hijacking the football talk for a quick update… our AMAZING Purple Pride Band made the FINALS at UIL Area Competition and will perform again tonight at 8:45 for a chance to go to STATE!! WOOHOO!
It’s been a long 24hrs for the PNG band. Football game Friday night, back up at the school at 4am, on the football field at 5am for run thru, travel to channelview, perform 10:15am, wait for prelim results at 530pm, performed again at 845 in the rain, and will wait for the results at 11pm before traveling back to PNGHS around 12-1am.

Absolutely! That had to be the most EXCITING play of the season so far and one we’ve all been waiting for! I bet the fans at the game, everyone watching the live stream, and our 92.5 crew went totally BANANAS!! I know all of us watching at my friends house did and the whole neighborhood probably heard us…lol! I’m so glad that young man FINALLY got his “moment” and watching his teammates celebrate with him was icing on the cake!!
His catch was right in front of me. I kept saying WOW all the way down to his TD.

Watched Dave Campbells last night. They said we win the District Championship last night. Just backing up what you are posting.
Co-champs but receive the district first place playoff position due to head to head win. Who wants a co-championship?
Lots to play for.
Perfect 10-0 record is rare. A sole district championship to be recorded in the history books without an asterisk.
Second team will get their chances in the first two rounds.

What was our total yards? I think we were way too conservative in the 2nd half.
The play calling returned to power run football behind #52 when the game pressure racketed up. It did not work last year and thus the reason for the offense diversification learning curve. Don’t abandon it when game pressure is exerted. Three times late in the 4th Q short fields and no TDs with short or TFLs runs on first and second downs and long passes on third downs with the opponent blitzing knowing what’s coming.
Confidence in the play calling has to mature and grow when the game pressure is increasing. Game did not need to come down to an INT in the end zone. With an opponent FG kicker with a 50+ range in waiting in OT.

Depending on when and where they play, that would be a good game to go watch. As long as they dont play on the same day that we do, I would wear my purple and sit on the Bears side. I agree with what Rez said. Montgomery needs to commit more to the run if they want to have a shot at beating good teams.
Last year Huntsville played SOC at Waco ISD stadium. I went to game because PNG played Kaufman at West Fork stadium on a Thursday if I remember correctly.
Currently Ennis is the third place D6 team and would play D5 runner up Dallas Hillcrest in bi-district first round. Winner could meet PNG in the Area second round.
Ennis 35 miles south of Dallas. Huntsville is a midpoint travel destination. Wish we could get Sam Houston U Bower football stadium for the game. Too many good local Huntsville area HS teams near by. Competition for stadium would likely go to a local area HS first.

we need to figure out how to send the catch at the end of the half to DCTF. That’s the play of the week if you ask me.
Good luck with that.
Watched the last two Dave Campbell Texas Football Friday night wrap up telecasts. They mentioned the PNG vs Nederland MCM score at the last of the broadcast after nearly an hour.
PNG vs Montgomery was their No 6 game of the week. Again coverage was an afterthought.
The have a Golden Triangle high light segment still don’t know what sits in the middle of the Orange, Port Arthur, and Beaumont triangle?
Went on and on about La Porte in the game vs Angleton. Who put the only lost on 5AD1 La Porte?

PNG gets plenty of mention. The La Porte loss to PNG was called a better result for La Porte than any win on Angleton’s record on Tepp and Stepp. 9-0 on the season and our 3 big tests were all featured games.

With 1500 schools or whatever the number is, I’ll take it

Bailey under center and walking the ball back to a deep Henry is too slow of a developing run play. Montgomery LBs and CBs filled the gaps.
1. impressed that the smaller Montgomery front seven did not get worn down in the 4th Q by PNG OL.
2. impressed with the Montgomery punter’s ability to flip the field. Only once did he out kick his coverage.
3. impressed with the 50+ yd range of Montgomery FG kicker.
4. Montgomery QB very football intelligent will take a throwaway then risk an interception until the end. Believe two PNG INTs were the first of the season.
Agree with previous posts about Montgomery offense going away from their big RB Keidrid Ben to control the game clock and keep PNG offense on the side lines.

I watched the game again today on NDN Press. Did the Bears QB throw a punch to the head of a tackler on their last 2nd qtr drive? And then turn to say something to the PNG sideline? Perhaps even to the coaches. Maybe I'm seeing things.

The outside containment on that long QB run is unusual. Normally the OLB would have contain but he is committing to the inside run. Fix that and those edges will be much more secure.
This was driving me nuts all night. To watch the QB fake it down the middle to the RB and then just zip around the edge. Stay home and smoke that dude!!! I’m sure Coach reiterated that the next morning in video, needs to get cleaned up before the playoffs. Heck, maybe he was getting held all night for all I know, couldn’t much see that side of the field. Typically they are pretty solid on the edges.

Amen. Coaches have always had to stress gap responsibility. Do YOUR job. If one man fails the play is blown. One weak link breaks the chain.

In the olden days, depending on the formation, the DE and OLB (chief or brave) on each side either had the QB, or whoever ran off tackle, and the other guy had outside containment. Merryman was allowed to gallop right around the end on a couple of plays. Linebacker crashed down. Maybe it was a stunt and another guy got held that would have covered that.
