That means no gig at the moment haha

To me it’s not even just a luxury at this time it’s needed for not just the football program
So much scrutiny on kids being outside in heat and weather
And to be honest kids now aren’t as conditioned (maybe OVERLY “CONDITIONED”) they can’t handle the great outdoors like our generation
I’ve probably talked about it before but
Not only did my HS (THigh) have a student smoking section on campus
But also my JR HIGH! had an unofficial smoking section (7-9th) which is hilarious - the reasoning was that because they stood 3 feet outside the actual school property during recess that there was nothing the faculty could do to them for smoking and drinking alcohol LOL
All that to say kids now are confined and are conditioned to that just rambling

There was a time in PN-G football history that you went through a 2 hour practice, in the heat of the summer, with only one ‘water break’. That was a cup of crushed ice with some concoction poured in it which I assume was some type of electrolyte mix. You had to be a tough son of a gun to stick with that. In 2026 that would probably be a UIL violation. No doubt prior gens were tough. And rarely if ever overweight.

Obviously budget driven. And the fact that construction costs are much greater these days. You can’t get as much for your $9 million with inflation, tarriffs and other economic craziness going on. Where the misunderstanding and ‘disappointment’ may come into play is from the lack of specific details as far as what was in mind by the bond planners.

Financially, for the taxpayers benefit, it can be explained and justified. But many who voted for this bond may have expected more. Who knows, maybe if given an option for a more expensive version it could have passed. Maybe not.

While it is disappointing to alumni and citizens who want top notch facilities for PNG, maybe it wouldn’t be financially responsible to invest $15-20M into a level of facility that is typically seen only in much larger or wealthy districts. No one can say that this admin and board overspent on that building.

I was excited about an enclosed practice building. Looking past the pride factor, it’s not perfect or ideal, but the cover will achieve most of the real objectives of such a facility. Reduce or eliminate missed practices due to weather conditions which helps the consistency, growth and improvement of whatever program. (Sports, band, etc). And to help protect student health and well being from heat exposure. Maybe nothing to brag about, but on par with or better than what similar districts have.

I agree but I'm not going to rock the boat. I don't have a vote and no one has shared details with me to question anything. If Coach Joseph and staff are ok with it, that goes a long way.

It seems to be a case of you eiher have lots of money to throw into it, or not. Same concept as the stadium. Would have been nice to have a brand new, impressive, $20-30M+ stadium (2009 dollars). But the $9M that went into upgrades built a very nice home side and pressbox. At least the district is not going into deep debt in times of uncertainty, and raising taxes. It will be great to get the things that are included in the $75M bond.

That seems unusual as very few high schools choose that route because of the tradeoffs. In no comparison does a covered field provide the benefits of an enclosed facility. Even limited climate control (fans) is an improvement over open air. But if it’s decided by budget, it does no good to stir the pot and question. That’s the last comment I’ll make on the topic but will leave the thread here for discussion.

Given that the bus maintenance and parking facilities will need to be in place to move the buses, the athletic facilities (practice facility and weight room) may be on hold for a while. That will chip away at the budget anyway given price increases.

Mesquite Poteet will need every foot of that practice facility since UIL moved them into the district with SOC for the next two years.

The fully enclosed facilities have their own set of issues. They need to be fully climate controlled otherwise they become a disgusting sweat box of mold and mildew. And it’s simply not cost effective to keep a building that size climate controlled at all times. The cover we are getting serves the purpose we need. It will lower the field temp my 10-15°, it keeps us out of the rain and it can be used as a fully functional field. Along with all the other additions, the future of PNG athletics is only improving from this upgrade.

Ours smelled like mildew the entire tine (and very intensely
I imagine that’s why the first one got torn down.
In fact I believe that smell is my original reference for mildew

In the ‘old’ days, before my parents put in central air, like all homes built in the 60’s and earlier, we had what was called an ‘attic fan’ with large blades that pulled air through the open windows. That at least kept the air circulating through the house. Multiple giant fans are often used to move the air in large, enclosed practice buildings. But that might not stop the mold growth.

Anyone know details on what will go into the old, to be renovated, bus maintenance building? I’ve heard some info on that but am curious if it’s public yet. Or what is known to the public.
