Huntsville @ PN-G

22 season
Dominated by PAM who was not fantastic that season lost to FBM and it wasn’t competitive
Beat TC, Dayton, by 7
Barely beat Nederland made a game winning drive with under 2:00 (playoffs would have been iffy) struggled early against Brenham in playoffs LBJ by only 5 FBM by 8 in a nail biter and first ever victory against them BUT we were getting better every week and woulda coulda (maybe not shoulda) won the SC that year

23
Lost to PAM (lost first round of playoffs 44-7) barely beat WOS in OT (who went 4-7 (3-3 district in 4Adii)
Beat FBM 7-0 could have turned on one or two plays
Beat Nederland 41-40
Beat LC by 3 didn’t look great late (LC was #1 yes) struggled a bit vs Huntsville in NRG
let LH cut victory to 7 pts late
Played a near perfect game vs SOC

That’s my argument that this is the best team at this point in the season in this era we’ve pretty much dominated KO and ranked LP who some are still choosing to play for the SC at least
And it doesn’t get more dominant than a decent LC team we made them look bad but they’re not a bad team they had no first downs until 2:00 left in the 3rd Q when we had some subs in
That’s hard to do vs the JV

Winfrey is the M Droddy of this year (from 22)
Our defense is swarming again and the offense is better than any of the aforementioned years with Roschon it’s a different story but we had to score 72 vs Crosby lol wow of course he’s the best player of this era imagine if he had this defense behind him.
A few clarifications :

(1) Beating FBM 7-0 was one of the most dominant performances against a really good offense that a png defense has ever had. That game might as well have been 20-0, and we weren’t favored. Not only that, it was the first time in years that anyone had shut out FBM. And, we kicked a field goal to make it 10-0 but FBM committed a penalty, which we accepted to burn clock and kneel the ball (rather than give them the ball with 40 seconds left). It was a shot heard round the state that our defense was serious.
(2) We didn’t struggle early against Brenham in 2022 - We went to the half up 28-7 and the game was never in doubt in the second half.
(3) We beat Nederland 41-16 in 2023. MaxPreps is wrong, no matter how many times I submit corrections. Nederland score 9 in the first half and got a garbage time td in the 4th quarter.

Offense: better than in 2022-2024, overall. Our run game isn’t as good as ‘23 or ‘24, but the total product is better. Here’s hoping the line and running gets a lot better every week. Pass protection is miles better than last year.

Defense: D line isn’t as good as ‘22 or ‘23. At least as good as ‘24. We aren’t as big as in ‘23. Linebackers and secondary are much better than in ‘24, the pass coverage is better, and the corners have been extremely quick to shed blocks and engage runners in the open field.

As a whole, we probably balance with ‘23 at the same point in the season. But, I’m not ready to say we’re better than in ‘23 because the d line isn’t as good as it was in ‘23 and the run game is still catching up. Also, d line might be more important than a good offense in a deep playoff run. Here’s hoping it all keeps getting better from week to week.

That's fine, but we're not exactly on the same page wrt the word "best". And I wasn't focused on the "at this point of the season". Most of your points support my thoughts, in fact. Those teams overcame much adversity, new coaches, new systems, injuries, among other issues, and made it to the state championship game in Dallas two years in a row.
Anyway ...

Clarification: I don’t know if I’d call fbm a “really good offense” in 23’. They were really fast and big and that’s about it. Still, after barely containing them the year before , holding them to zero was like a heavyweight KO.

They had a young QB, but otherwise they were typical FBM for those years. We had a young QB as well, a soph. We basically had 3 regular ILs and two were injured, and as it turned out, one suited up but didn't play. One of those starting ILs had 6 tackles, several for a loss, that game. First time in ages that FBM was shut out.

Sounds like Huntsville might unleash their QB this week and let him run. Their RB Brown has rushed for 645 yards and 8 TDs so far this year. 8.5 ypc and 161ypg. So another challenge for a swarming PNG defense to keep these guys contained.

This years defensive line is doing a great job of getting a push on the opposing line while Winfrey, Brashers and company are making great reads and getting to the ball with speed. The dbs are also making some key tackles when needed. It'll take the entire unit playing in sync to stop another good rushing attack.

I'm almost starting to feel bad for Moebes as far as the number of interviews he does every week. I've heard only two but its already Tuesday and he has a game to prepare for. That's 20 interviews for a 10 game season. Good grief. On top of that, this podcast asked the exact same questions as the big show did last night. But hey, that's their business.

He’s done at least three just through Monday and Tuesday. I’d rather leave Jeff Joseph alone and let him think about football.

Huntsville stats as published by Maxpreps.

Lots of good points
But we look better at this stage in the season to me (ha) than any since 07
Which I took a sabbatical from 77-07 lol
But I’d include 07 as a start of this “era”
We're good. I'm looking forward to this Friday night! Nederland vs Dayton will be interesting also.

Three weeks - we were away, bye, then away. I hardly remember what the old place looks like

;) Climb into the way back machine and see the real old place.

Winfrey is a great player in his own right. I don't see a comparison to Droddy. Winfrey was nominated as a preseason defensive MVP of 5A Div2, and that appears to be spot on.
