Made it to the game last night. Ran late, because I left Austin later than I’d hoped. (Politics happened.) Got there about halfway through the second quarter.

I’m most frustrated by the penalties. Yes, it’s a big rivalry game. But we’re also eight games into the season at this point and faced serious adversity from Huntsville, MLC, and La Porte earlier in the season. Not to mention that we have two state championship appearances and plenty of tough playoff wins to our credit over the last two seasons. The boys know how to handle pressure better than that. This is the area in most critical need of improvement.

The defense got burned a lot, but I can’t really hang this game on the defense. Your defense is inevitably going to start underperforming when it’s spending too much time on the field.

Two missed field goals, an interception, and way too many short drives by the offense. Those are the difference-makers in this game, in my opinion.

To Nederland’s credit, it was apparent Scott Rich spent years working for Gary Joseph last night. It seemed like he knew exactly how to adjust the Nederland D for every look the Indian O gave him. I suppose you could say he has an intuitive understanding of the Joseph play-calling philosophy, certainly better than any other HC I’ve watched Jeff Joseph square off against to date. Once again, Nederland made an outstanding hire in picking Rich.

Here’s the good news. I saw Jackson Christian at the Whataburger on Twin City last night. He was upbeat, classy as ever, and reassuring the other PN-G students in the restaurant that the Indians will be okay. All the rumors are true—the kid’s got the best attitude you could ask for from a high school football player. If the rest of the team takes that attitude, uses this as a learning opportunity and a motivator, we’ll be alright the rest of the season.

PS: Y’all know what I say about history repeating itself. The only time in school history the Indians have made it to a third consecutive state title game was the 1955 season. We won state that season. PN-G went 11-2 that year, both losses occurring in the regular season. Y’all know who those losses were to?

Our rivals: Nederland and TJ.

Always be faithful, folks.

I always appreciate the thoughtful, reflective and insightful words that both you and Indian Fan bring to this forum…so, thank you!

i agree with everything said in this post. To Jackson Christian, thank you for your continued unwavering effort, enthusiasm, optimism and dedication you bring to this team. Continue to inspire and encourage those around you and we will all see the results. Blessings to you!

Without sounding like I’m jumping on a bandwagon or looking to make an excuse, I am very concerned about the play calling. We’ve won a couple of very tough games that could have gone either way and we’ve won others that were not as challenging. The play calling has remained consistent. Last night we hit a brick wall, and the play calling was predictable, uncreative, and apparently incapable of adjusting. Going forward, there will be more brick walls as playing tough teams will be the norm. I truly believe that this excellent team of coaches can see that and will do what it takes to move us forward and capitalize on the strengths of this team.

I look forward to history repeating itself per the 1955 team! Let’s go NDNs, and definitely… ALWAYS BE FAITHFUL!!

"Last night we hit a brick wall, and the play calling was predictable, uncreative, and apparently incapable of adjusting."

Nederland played single coverage and the rest of team was packed in the box (within 7 yards of the line of scrimmage) running downhill. 7 to 9 players against our OL. No way we are winning that. The few times we ran outside we made some plays. Pretty basic strategy forcing us to beat them in the air.

Port Neches should have ran some trick plays in that game like when you have the wild cat formation with Blair why did they not run a trick play in that scenario.

Well, I felt VERY uneasy about this game…always do, but it was different this time because the team has just looked really flat all season so I had a feeling Nederland might be HUNGRIER to knock us OFF the top spot than we were to STAY THERE…I sure was hoping they’d prove me wrong, ugh! However, most of the team has only known the “thrill of VICTORY” and it’s easy to get comfortable so hopefully experiencing the “agony of DEFEAT” will be the SPARK they needed! The play calling has been questionable all season and didn’t notice any changes, adjustments, or improvement last night so that’s concerning!

I think they thought they were going to win and did not have to prepare that much for it and that reminded me of a couple of weeks ago when Bama played Vandy they came very flat in that game and ended up losing to them same thing happened to PNG last night.

I agree with Nederland wanted it more. You could tell from the coin toss that the Indians weren’t fired up. I would put much more blame on bad coaching and play calling. When they keep stuffing the up the middle plays you try something else. The coaches didn’t have the team ready for this one and I don’t think the coaches were ready for this game. We have the talent and our coaches are great. Just weren’t ready.
Yes, Nederland definitely had the 'fire in the belly.' Historically, both teams tend to rise to the occasion for this game, but for some reason, we didn't. I don't understand why the coaches didn't put #25 into the game in the second half, especially when it was obvious that #27 was struggling. #25 Caden Naquin had sensational back-to-back games against Spendora and WF. Maybe he could have sparked some life into our offense if he had been allowed to play. This is #25's senior year; he has shown us what he can do, so he should be given more playing time.

I also don't understand why the coaches let the clock run out at the end of the 2nd quarter, when we had the bal. With 30+ seconds left, we should have at least made an effort to get within field goal range. If successful, it might have made a difference in the end. Of course, the two missed field goals are what cost us the game.

The last time PN-G won state, the very next year the Indians posted a 10-0 district record. I was looking forward to seeing that history repeated this year, and the school record for consecutive wins broken. But, there is still a lot of football to be played. As you say, "Always be faithful."

Got to give Matthew Wright and the Nederland defense alot of credit they had a good defensive game plan and they executed...Coach Rich reminds alot of folks here of the way Dan Hooks at WO-S coached very animated and all over the referees when a call doesn't go our way it's refreshing to see tbh there's no mistaking who's in charge here...now to PN-G i said this before as long as Jeff Joseph and Matt McDaniel are on the PN-G sideline PN-G will win alot of games that said PN-G needs to find a second receiver Nunley can't do it all and I felt that alot of passes from Bailey were forced trying to get the ball to him and Nederland took advantage

I give the entire Nederland team credit, they came to play football. As far as the PNG team, I'm an outsider looking in, but it's been obvious that the team has been struggling, even with the successes this season, which speaks to the coaches and the good individual athletes that are on the team. For one thing last season's state championship is a tough act to follow, for the boys especially. When folks begin comparing the two teams (last season's vs this seasons') there's no good that will come of it.
Anyway I really hope that this MCM loss will get things on track for this PNG team. The effects of the loss could go either way, but I hope it will give the team a restart and new beginning.
Good luck to both mid-county teams going forward, this certainly makes for an interesting district race.

Barring an injury we don’t know about, to me it would have been a no-brainer to give Caden some carries during the game. To me it’s another example of something that could have been tried but wasn’t. Given what he had shown in previous games, I don’t see what would have been the downside.

With all the predictable play calling this year, especially on offense, I fear the ghosts of Indian Coaches Past (MB, Troy, Faircloth) have come back to haunt us. We need to exorcise them before the playoffs, otherwise we may be looking at an abrupt and unpleasant end to our season. We need to summon the spirts of Ethridge, Malone, and yes, Joseph, to revitalize this team and get it back to a championship mindset. It's not too late! Go Indians!

Steadfast, Faithful, Supportive, Loving these are the traits that got us through a 48 year drought.
These and more will get us through where we are now.
I am confident that chief Joseph, staff, and players are going to do what it takes to take us a far as we can go. One game at a time.
When this season ends I want them all to know just how much we love and appreciate all of them no matter what the outcome is.
Now is not the time to be wavering. Now is not the time to worry or panic.
The reality is that our district is going to be a very tough district for a while.
The greater the challenge, the greater the reward.

When SOC lost to us, some of them seemed to express a disdain for coming in second.
We need to be a championship community. A fertile ground for young parents to choose our communities over others.
Other teams may unfairly recruit outside their districts but ours is one of honor, pride and tradition.

Good words. Friday was one loss. The team probably knows they didn’t play their best. Nederland was just better that game but in no way superior. That type of result can be fixed. The season is still open for any possibility. No guts, no glory. Team will get after it and fight. And they must improve where it’s needed. We the fans need to pick our head up and support them. Winners don’t quit.

Yes
One thing- for us to win state this year

We’re probably going to have to beat SOC
then one or two other great teams possibly Texas High or Huntsville. Just to get to the final four.
To me
Doesn’t matter what round it is
First place we meet them in Regional Final
Second place we meet second round (assuming we win lol)
This coaching staff plays for Championships)
Yes I do want to play deep into the playoffs
And at home for that first game

And I was super excited to be in that first place bracket and meet Texas High for Regional Semifinals
But hey
We’re coming at it from a point of view of success
Just shows troubles are equal whether you’re 0-7 or 7-0

NEXT GAMEDAY

PN-G INDIANS FOOTBALL

I could not be more proud of our team and our community. The spirit here is unmatched! I am so lucky to be a part of it and to wear the purple and white! The journey of this football season, with these coaches and our players, will stay with me forever.  -- PN-G Head Coach Jeff Joseph
