Had some friends use my tickets. Two are former long time coaches with several state championships and just spoke with them. They were like what’s up with the crazy offensive play calling and we need some major defensive changes or it will be a short playoffs. Said there is no rhyme or reason to our offensive philosophy. Also without going into details we need some major defensive changes.

Good words. Friday was one loss. The team probably knows they didn’t play their best. Nederland was just better that game but in no way superior. That type of result can be fixed. The season is still open for any possibility. No guts, no glory. Team will get after it and fight. And they must improve where it’s needed. We the fans need to pick our head up and support them. Winners don’t quit.

BTHO Magnolia!
A team with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove is hard to beat…that was Nederland Friday night!! I think we’ll bounce back just fine…losing is tough, but necessary sometimes! I saw this quote the other day and it’s SO TRUE…
A loss ain’t a loss, it’s a lesson
Appreciate the pain, it’s a blessing!

I agree with both of these points. However, I am actually less concerned about the defense than I am about the offense. Although the defense is not where it needs to be, it has at least shown a steady improvement IMO as the season has progressed. On the other hand, we have had a great running game from the start but the offense has always been too predictable. This does not matter against most teams because we can simply overpower them. However, this weakness gets exposed against better defensive teams. Although there are a number of things we could do to make the offense less predictable, even within the context of the running game, someone mentioned something the other day that I had not previously thought about that appears to be missing from the offense this year: we have not effectively developed much in the way of a short passing game. This would have several potential benefits: (1) It would decrease the predictability of the offense, (2) It would allow both the QB and the receivers to get into a better rhythm in the passing game and increase their confidence, (3) since people will obviously be stacking the box to stop our inside running game short passes to the outside could be particularly effective, in at least some cases leading to big gainers, and (4) this could further improve the effectiveness of both our running game and our passing game. It has been pointed out that this part of our offense played a big role in our offense the last few years but seems to have been relatively neglected this year, and this has caused me to consider whether at least some of the perceptions about the QB and receivers being a bit “off” this year might actually be related to this. While it is true that we need other receivers besides Nunely to step up, etc., it is also true that if we generally attempt longer passes, or primarily pass in obvious passing situations, we are by definition utilizing mostly passes that have a lower probability of success regardless of the receiver. Once again, I agree with many on this board that have expressed a need for the offensive play calling to be more creative. However, upon reflection it seems to me that something as simple as this could make a big difference.

Nederland didn’t do any more than LC, Huntsville or LaPorte against our defense. Giving up big gains on passes and QB runs is not uncommon this year. On offense we failed to finish drives when we had the ball. If they had it’s a win.

Passes to the halfbacks and tight ends would be a good change up. Or Chatagnier/Tyson out of the backfield on a wheel route would be interesting. Might even be some merit to both being in the backfield and going with some option plays.

Even more intriguing, some QB runs. There were some yards for the taking against Nederland with either approach. On that 4th quarter INT, #44 was all alone on the opposite side. The entire Nederland defense was focused on the 2 receivers that were running routes to the other sideline.

Playing the two weakest teams 2 weeks in a row didn’t exactly help prepare for the tough part of the schedule either.

I know it's taboo to say, but I'll say it. We miss last year's OC. Ring, ring. Hello. This is Stevie Wonder calling and even I see THAT. The OC from 2022 and 2023 was excellent at game planning, setting up plays, using motion, being creative in all kinds of sets, and keeping defenses off balance. This year, we've seen a TE throw back pass for TDs vs MLC, and the quick throw to #11 where the outside WR comes racing in and knocks the DB off of #11 for a long TD vs Splendora. Anyone see a throw back to the TE or a quick throw to #11 last week? Anyone see any type of creativity beyond running a counter with eight or nine defenders in the box? Or a slow developing crossing route to kids who can't catch? Last year's OC would have exposed Nederland. Remember last year when Nederland stuffed the box with eight and nine defenders and he threw a lateral to a WR who then threw a bomb to another WR who was so wide open he had time to go to the concession stand and buy popcorn? Remember the Huntsville game at NRG where on 4th and 1 from midfield, we lined up in the tush-push, and Shea Adams faked the sneak, faked the pitch-out to the RB, and he ran 40 yards for a first down inside the red zone? Or, in the state championship game when SOC started to walk up their safeties to help against the run, and the OC motioned our WRs to cut across the middle for wide open throws, or if we didn't throw the ball, the WR cutting aross the middle hammered the DBs walking in in run support? I could give more examples, but, again, note to self...turn the page. On to Montgomery.

It has been very boring play calling and if you don't have no trick plays you won't last long in the playoffs at all.

That is why I think in all honesty we need to schedule some tough opponents in the first couple of weeks of the season to get us ready for the tough part of the district and get us ready for the playoffs.

What do y'all think of this?
I think that WAS Nederland’s Super Bowl to this point and they played like it. Sounds like a cool line though. PN-G players appeared to be the team that took it more lightly. As a result a team THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE WON did.

I hope every PN-G player that might see that is mad as hell for letting someone take away part of their glory and celebrate ON THEIR OWN FIELD. And that’s every player on the team including the ones who have college offers. Every player on the team could have made a bigger difference in the outcome. It’s not all on the offensive play calling. There were critical missed blocks, missed tackles, missed opportunities for interceptions or knocking the ball down instead of giving up long completions, missed kicks and lack of vision on the field. It’s time to either get serious and play to the level that’s needed to even have a thought of a deep playoff run much less a repeat of last season. Rethink that confidence level that might be based on past accomplishments and reestablish a reason for confidence in 2024. Do what it takes to have YOUR coach on an interview and YOUR team in the spotlight for winning a big game. It’s not going to get any easier from here on out. Remember that outcome and do what it takes to not happen again.
I don’t care if this opinion turns some people off. The team has the love and support of fans, but it’s time to either play better football THAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF, or suffer more defeats and let someone live the glory of beating you.

Meh. He's trying to bring a little class to the Nederland faithful. I hope it works.

PNG plays the worst game that I've seen a PNG team play in 2 or 3 years, and still should have won by a field goal. And to be frankly honest, the refs took the game away from MLC vs Nederland. And now Huntsville has lost their starting QB to injury. This is simply Nederland's year, and that's ok. Lots of Srs on their team that deserve a winning season.

It DEFINITELY seems like we’ve been playing not to LOSE all season! Is it just me, or does anyone else think the coaches seem a bit “detached” from the players on the sideline this year? I know McDaniel was always actively coaching, keeping them motivated, and VERY VOCAL with encouragement or “constructive criticism” if necessary cause I could hear him from the 17th row when he got really FIRED UP…lol! But, I haven’t noticed the same level of involvement or intensity from him and a lot of the coaches this year. Seems like when this sort of “vibe” started happening in the past, it had a lot to do with PARENTS complaining about playing time, or the coaches being too “aggressive” and hurting their kids “feelings”! I sure HOPE that’s not the case because PNG has lost some really good coaches over the years because of that nonsense!!

The season can be turned back around. Plenty of football left with a lot of potential there. Dedication and hard work can do it.
The loss is just magnified because of the opponent. In this district it is extremely difficult to go undefeated. We are by far not finished; this still is a very good team that had a bad game. Guess what, IT HAPPENS!!! Get back to PNG football and let's make a run!!
