Nerve-shredding Texas bridge reopens…

There was a time, long long ago that summertime ‘drivers ed’ classes included a mandatory crossing of the more narrow, older version of the Rainbow Bridge. Imagine the shredded nerves of brand new drivers going through that experience. And the nerves of steel that the driving instructor possessed. (God Bless them. The things that educators would do for some extra money…)

That was also a time when brand new, ‘state of the art’ driving simulators were used in the now demolished B wing of the high school.

I did it. Nothing to it.
Just stay in your lane and keep your distance. No drama, just relax.

"Shredded nerves" is an accurate description - at least it was for me. If memory serves me, I took drivers ed in 1966 and I still vividly remember the experience of going over the Rainbow Bridge. It felt like the road was too narrow for 2 cars. It was truly a "rite of passage". And I believe it was the last test before getting a learners permit.

The worst part of it was being in the back seat while the other student driver took his/her turn. All you could do was pray that they could keep it in the lane.

The cars back then had a brake pedal on the passenger side for the teacher to engage if needed, but no second steering wheel. That’s when you hoped that their parents had taken them to the big TJ stadium parking lot for plenty of practice keeping it straight. Man what a summer.
