DCTF 2024 Preview

Coach: Jason Todd. Lettermen R/L: 35/30. Starters returning O/D: 3/6. 2023: 13-3 state finalist/6-0 district. Key losses: Brandon Jones (UTEP), Jaden Rowe (Louisiana-Monroe), Jordan Rowe (Louisiana-Monroe), Kerry Williams (North Texas), Trey Jackson (Texas Tech), Danny Green (Texas Southern).

Players to watch: LB Jayden Shelton (6-1, 220, 4.5), OL Meka Ugorji (6-4, 290), DB Tobias Gary (5-11, 180, 4.5), QB/P Carter Kopecky (6-0, 180, 4.5), OL Byron Abner (6-2, 295), DL Paul Blair (6-2, 250, 4.8). Top juniors: LB Jamarion Phillips (6-1, 225, 4.5), DB Marcel Gipson (5-10, 175, 4.5). Top sophomore: OL Brian Swanson (6-4, 300).

Other prospects: DB Kendrick Carter, DB Rickey Giles, DL Jordan Atkinson, RB Damond Williams, WR Jalen Moore, OL Brinson Ramsey-Brooks, RB Mikel Trotter, DL Kordea Houston, DL Kamauryn Morgan, ATH Reggie McNeal, Jr.

2024 notes: The Golden Bears came up just short of a third straight state title a year ago, but a talented, young nucleus coming up from an unbeaten JV team paired with 35 returning lettermen gives Todd’s team a great chance at three titles in four years. LB Shelton (119 tackles, 13 TFL, 7 sacks) is the headliner of the SOC defense, but keep an eye on a talented secondary, led by DB Gary (59 tackles, 4 INTs), that could remind SOC fans of their 2021-2022 group. QB/P Kopecky (1,223 yards, 18 TDs receiving) played a ton as a junior and will get his chance to lead the offense full-time, and he’s also a very good punter. The skill talent is young but a big and physical offensive line will give the new faces time to adapt to key roles in 2024.
