PN-G Football - Defensive Points Allowed

That team was indeed good and ranked in the top 10 all year. ‘72 was Jeff Bergeron’s senior year. He gained 1465 yards rushing in 10 games that season. Unfortunately Kenny Washington had a better game in their matchup and led the 5th ranked Bees to a win over the #3 ranked Indians and a district championship in a time when only the district championship made the playoffs.
Recall PNG was leading game in the 4th Q. Lincoln had ball around their Own 20 yd line. Kenny Washington threw an incomplete pass on third and long and PNG was called for roughing the QB. Lincoln went down the field to score the go ahead TD.
Previous year Lincoln and Joe Washington should have won state but Joe was injured in the playoffs. In that previous year Joe vs Jeff game. Jeff was playing safety late in the 4th Q trying to protect a lead. Joe broke through line of scrimmage opposite side Jeff was playing. Jeff ran him down from behind had a bad starting angle and tackled him around the PNG 15 yd line after a ~50 yd gain. What could’ve should’ve moments in history.

I was at the 1972 game against Lincoln, middle linebacker David Bruno blitzed and absolutely crushed Kenny Washington on a pass play that was incomplete and the penalty flag was thrown, the controversy besides the call was the refs let the QB stay on the field after he stood up for about 5 minutes instead of getting him off the field and letting Lincoln continue to play with their star QB uninterrupted on a crucial drive. Bruno was our starting fullback and linebacker, tough guy

I was also at that game. A terrible call that ended up costing us the game. Biggest disappointment of my life at the time. TJ had won district with Larry Mayer in 1970 and Lincoln in 1971 with Little Joe Washington. 1972 was supposed to be "our" year to win the district (only one team advanced to the playoffs back in those days). We had a lot of talent. I think something like 15 players from the 1972 team landed D1 college scholarships. Lincoln had a great team in 1972, but we deserved to win that game.
