Next Game: PNG vs Texas High

Second Tiger fan to Grace your message board. I have respect for the history of PNG. In my opinion, this is the best Tiger team since they won state in 2002. PNG is the state champion until someone knocks them off. That is the Texas High challenge this Friday. I have watched the Huntsville and Nederland game films. The following are my observations:
1) Both teams have very good OL and DL lines. It will be a good test for both teams. We will see which is better. The Texas High line has created running lanes for some talented backs and protected Potter in the passing game.
2) I was impressed by the power of #15 and quickness of #26. Hopefully #15 is good to go Friday. I was equally impressed with the Nederland RB, but Texas High did a good job containing him. Texas High has 3 rb options. Johnson (#4) is the starter and has commited to SFA. When he needs a rest Ball (#3) or Moore relieve him. Ball a junior has committed to Oregon.
3) Where I think the teams differ the most is in the passing game. I give the edge to Texas High. Potter has a 68% completion rate and spreads the ball to 4 receiver. He has only thrown one interception. Each in their own way are play makers. It appears the weakness in the PNG defense is their secondary. The secondary of Texas High is a strength With 18 nits. In watching PNG games, the Indians seem to rely on #11. I personally did not see a balanced passing attack.
4) Potter is a “pro style” QB. At 6’4” and about 225#, he is a big kid. The offensive line has given him very good protection. As the Tigers have a very efficient running game, he is not called on to run. But he is not a statute. He can run if the opportunity arises. It will be interesting to watch if PNG can pressure him and contain the run.
5) The same wall Earl Campbell met in the 70s at Grim is still there. The improvement is there is now padding on the wall.

One thing for sure, Friday will he an interesting game. The winner will have to earn it. Friday is what high school football is all about.

Welcome Bordertown. Glad to get your perspective. We fans talk and speculate but as you and Ace have said, the players performance will determine the outcome. That and the coaching. It will be a heck of a game.

Welcome Bordertown. Thanks for posting. Lots of good stuff in your post. From what I can find online, Texas High will be the best team PNG has played since last year's state championship game vs. SOC. Texas High is loaded. Safe travels.

When I was there (and since 1954) it was a complete cement wall about 8 ft high
(No railing like it has now on top it was a complete cement structure all the way up)(might be in the same place it was but no its not the same wall for sure)
Looking at pictures (I’ve been back once maybe twice in person since 1987) I notice the press box is twice as tall now

Good post, and as I've been saying, I wish #15 was good to go also, as well as another RB who was injured in the Klein Oak game.
PNG in the regular season seemed to play to the competition, relaxing too much and getting into sloppy play with weaker teams, and then upping the game a bit for better teams. The last couple of RS games went better, and the playoff games so far have been much better, perhaps a reflection of JV guys coming in and others stepping up. The team seems to be much more of a "team" now too. Anyway, PNG might be last years' state champs, semantics aside, but they are still the underdogs, ranked at the bottom of the top 10, and TH is ranked 3rd in the state. I'm hoping the Indians will give TH a good game, and then we'll see what happens.

#15 Chatagnier has been injured but #27 sophomore Tyson Henry is PNG’s best running back and looked like he was back to 100% last week. Henry has quickness, field vision, can change direction on a dime and is not afraid to lower the pads and hit when contact is unavoidable. And he has enough speed to pick up big chunks of yardage if he sees open field. Starting middle linebacker #4 Mason Wuenschell can step in as the power back when needed. He’s also a former QB. Mason does not go down easily and will be difficult to stop in short yardage situations. If Chatagnier can effectively come back without risking his health, that will be an added boost to the PNG rushing attack. All running behind a large offensive line, complimented by several large halfbacks who could start on the offensive line for a lot of teams, and featuring two of the best offensive tackles in the state. Controlling the game pace with that attack is PNG’s best offensive strategy.

And of course there is the very capable PNG passing game that can strike when necessary. Both teams have plenty of offensive weapons.

So true! Stepp predicted Huntsville Vs Randle State Championship game at the beg of the year and we see how that worked out. So I say, let them consider us the underdogs. No matter what happens on Friday, I hope it's a good clean game, no injuries on either side and the fans are respectful of each other no matter the outcome for their team.

We played Texas High during Faircloth’s last year. They have seen PNG. Plus, PNG doesn’t travel as well as in years past. Neither our home game vs Hallsville nor the Kaufman game at West Fork were anywhere close to PNG sellouts. People must be watching on NDN Press or Texan Live.

Or just getting too old like me. Spirit is high but body, not so much. Reality check.

You are a youngster. I have a ticket to the game and a hotel room. Saturday around midnight had to keep switching hotels and rooms has they were being booked before I could confirm my reservation.
I have only missed one playoff PNG game since 1966. PNG vs Texas City in 1974. My younger sister was getting married. A wet northerner blew in and windows on the church were shaking. When out to the car/radio and tuned into game first chance I could break away. Announcers said both teams stopped trying to punt on 4th against the wind in the 1st Q. The punts went for negative yards as each team scrambled after the ball as it was carried on the wind.

Speaking of attendance. Fan attendance can very well make a difference in this game. Both teams are good and this game will likely be decided by "the little things". A full PNG house could be the "Shock and Awe" that tilts the game for PNG. Turpin stadium seats only 15,971. It would be awesome if 8,000 Indians sshowed up. If PNG doesn't win this game there will be no more chances to show off the Indian Spirit this year. That would be a shame beacause there is nothin else like it in High School Footbal. Call as many fans as you can and emphasize how important this game is. Trade shifts with non-PNGers, lean on your bosses to let you off early and do whatever else is necessary to show up. The PNG football team can't see or feel you if you aren't at the game. (I have been a PNG Indian since 1955 and I hope the Indian Spirit goes on and on and on.}

Believe me these are once in a lifetime experiences to share with your spouses, children, grandchildren. It’s about the journey and final destination. Creating memories.
